Phase 1 starts below ↓The whole plan: € 399 one-off, no subscription.

A plan that keeps track of what needs to happen now.

Every step sits in its place in the order, with the lead time, the counter and the official source. You and your partner tick off what is done. The plan counts back from your departure date and shows what has to start when and what is running now.

Below is phase 1, exactly as it appears in the plan.

Phase 1 is the question "can we, and do we want to?". From phase 2 the arranging begins.

Phase 1 · Orientation

6 of 6 steps open

Ecuador is well within reach with a pension of three basic wages, 1,446 dollars a month. Your AOW goes along in full, thanks to a treaty from 2002. What determines your planning is the treaty that doesn't exist: without a tax treaty the Netherlands keeps taxing, and Ecuador taxes your worldwide income. And there is no CAK.

At the end of phase 1 you know the routes, you know what happens to your income and your healthcare, and the family stands behind the decision.

Doing this together?

Invite your partner with a link. You then each tick your own steps, on your own phone or laptop, and see at every step whether the other has already done it. No account needed.

We only store which step numbers you ticked, under a random code. No name, no email. Anyone with the link can see the ticks. After six months without use we delete it.

Step 1.1

Understand the system: two years temporary, permanent after 21 months

Lead time:
reading step
Costs:
none

In this step you learn how you may come to live in Ecuador. Ecuador has two kinds of residence:

  • Temporary, the residencia temporal. You get it in a category, such as jubilado or rentista. It's valid for up to two years and you can renew it more than once.
  • Permanent, the residencia permanente. You apply for it after 21 months in a row as a resident, before your temporary residence runs out. Whoever is married to an Ecuadorian can apply for it straight away.

You apply for every visa online at the Cancillería, the Ecuadorian ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility. That's possible from the Netherlands, but also from Ecuador, if you're there as a tourist. With a Dutch passport you may enter without a visa for up to 90 days in twelve months.

The thresholds are in basic wages, the salario básico unificado. In 2026 that's 482 dollars a month. Every year there's a new amount, and the threshold moves with it. Ecuador counts in dollars: everything in the country is expressed in US dollars. So your pension comes in in euros, and you live in dollars.

Not retired yet? Whoever leaves before AOW age looks at the income there is at that point.

  • Jubilado only works with a pension you already receive. The AOW only counts from the moment you receive it.
  • Rentista suits whoever lives on rent, interest or other income of their own. The threshold is the same: three basic wages a month.
  • Inversionista suits whoever buys a home in their own name, or ties up money at an Ecuadorian bank.
  • Nómada digital suits whoever keeps working remotely for an employer or clients outside Ecuador.

Step 1.2

Know what happens to your income, your AOW and your healthcare

Lead time:
an evening of research
Costs:
none

In this step you see what emigrating to Ecuador does to your tax, your AOW and your healthcare.

Tax. The Netherlands and Ecuador have no tax treaty. Ecuador isn't in the Belastingdienst's January 2026 table of treaty countries, nor in the treaty database. So the Netherlands keeps taxing your AOW, your pension and your annuity. And Ecuador taxes your worldwide income once you're a resident, with a deduction for the tax you already paid in the Netherlands. For newcomers there's one way out: the residencia fiscal temporal, five years of tax only on income from Ecuador. See steps 3.2 and 3.3.

The AOW. Here Ecuador is favourable. In 2002 the Netherlands and Ecuador concluded a treaty on the export of benefits, in force since 1 November 2006. That's why Ecuador is among the 36 countries to which the Netherlands pays the full AOW. Even whoever goes alone keeps the AOW for single people.

Healthcare. Ecuador isn't on the list of treaty countries for healthcare. The 2002 treaty is about benefits, not about health insurance. So there is no CAK. Your Dutch basic insurance stops when you deregister. After that your healthcare is a policy of your own, or the IESS, the Ecuadorian social security system. See step 3.1.

Your AOW build-up stops. Whoever lives outside the Netherlands is usually no longer insured. Every year until your AOW age then costs 2 percent of your later AOW. You can insure yourself voluntarily with the SVB. The application has to be in within one year.

Step 1.3

Explore the country: the Andes, the coast and the distances

Lead time:
weeks, preferably with a scouting trip
Costs:
a scouting trip is a serious cost item

In this step you choose where you want to live. Ecuador is small on the map, but the differences are large. Quito and Cuenca lie high in the Andes, the coast is hot and humid. Whoever knows the country from a round trip doesn't yet know what living there is like.

At every place look at three things:

  • The altitude and the climate. Live a few weeks in the place you choose, in the season in which you'll really be there. The altitude itself can also be hard on your body.
  • Healthcare. Ask at every place where the nearest hospital is, and whether your policy works there.
  • The desks. You get your cédula at an office of the Registro Civil. Ask beforehand where the office near you is.

Your scouting trip can straight away become your application. With a Dutch passport you may stay up to 90 days, and from Ecuador you can apply for your visa. See step 2.9.

Step 1.4

Get a picture of what it will cost

Lead time:
1-2 hours with the calculator
Costs:
none

In this step you see what the move will cost you. On the application side Ecuador is affordable. A temporary residence visa costs 320 dollars: 50 for the application and 270 for issue. Whoever is 65 or older pays half. The orden de cedulación costs 10 dollars, the cédula itself 5.

The money sits in three other items:

  • The health policy that replaces the CAK, and that comes back every year.
  • The move across the ocean. The household goods themselves are free of import duties, with a residence visa, but you do pay for the transport and the clearance.
  • The car, because a used car may not enter Ecuador. You sell it here and buy another one there.

Step 1.5

The family conversation

Lead time:
weeks, not hours
Costs:
none

In this conversation you decide together whether Ecuador fits, and when. This country comes with three things you need to look at together.

  • Tax. Without a tax treaty the same pension can be taxed in two countries. How much you keep net is something a tax adviser works out, and that figure belongs in this conversation.
  • The language. At the desks, the bank and the doctor everything is in Spanish. Agree who is going to learn Spanish, and how.
  • The distance. Family and grandchildren in the Netherlands are no longer a quick visit away. Agree how often you'll come back. Note: whoever is working towards permanent residence may be outside Ecuador for at most 90 days in total with a temporary residence.

Step 1.6

Choose your target date

Lead time:
decision point
Costs:
none

Choose the day you want to leave. The plan counts back from that date: when the papers from the Netherlands have to be in, when you apply for the visa and when you deregister.

Count in three clocks. Your VOG is usable for 180 days, counted to your last entry into Ecuador. Your household goods have to arrive between one month before and six months after your entry. And whoever wants the residencia fiscal temporal arranges the conditions within 120 days of entry.

Is your situation slightly different?

A partner who stays in the Netherlands, work that carries on, a house you keep, children who stay at school here: I'm happy to talk those through, even before you have the plan. Email me what's going on for you. I read it myself and reply within two working days.

If you then take the plan, I'll work what we discussed into your personal plan.

Phase 2 · Your visa0 of 10 steps open

You apply for the visa online in e-VISAS, from the Netherlands or from Ecuador. You choose your route first, because the proof differs a lot. Your papers get an apostille and a translation, and your VOG counts 180 days to your entry.

This phase is where the money of this journey sits. Without a tax treaty the Netherlands keeps its taxation, and Ecuador taxes your worldwide income, unless you get the residencia fiscal temporal. Your AOW goes along in full. Without a healthcare treaty there's no CAK: your policy is accepted before you deregister.

Phase 4 · The move0 of 4 steps open

In this phase you arrange what goes along. With a residence visa your household goods are free of import duties, if they arrive within the period. As a foreigner a car may not come along. And your pet needs a certificate at most ten days old.

Phase 5 · Arrival in Ecuador0 of 7 steps open

After landing you first get your orden de cedulación at the Cancillería and with it your cédula at the Registro Civil. Then come your healthcare, the bank and the driving licence. And after 183 days you're a resident for tax, with a return in March.

  1. 5.1The orden de cedulación, and your cédula at the Registro Civilone appointment at the Cancillería and one at the Registro Civil
  2. 5.2Your healthcare: a policy of your own, or voluntarily with the IESSa few weeks

  6. 5.6Housing: renting with two years of security, or buying in your own nameweeks to months
  7. 5.7Landedthe moment itself

14 of these 32 steps only appear when your answers call for them: a pet, a car, a partner without a job, children staying in the Netherlands.

Every step on one list, free

Not ready to start yet? Then you get the departure checklist for Ecuador: every step in order, to print and tick off. With it, five mails in a week and a half about the pitfalls and the real costs. If the rules for Ecuador change, you'll hear about it. After that we ask once where your plans stand, and now and then we send one thing that fits your moment. No newsletter, and you can switch it off at any time.

Then we count back to when you need to start at the latest, and you get a nudge at that moment. And one more, a month before you leave.

We use your address, and your departure date if you fill it in, only for the checklist, the guide and the mails after it. You can unsubscribe under every mail.

Three questions

Can't I find all this for free?

Yes. Everything in the plan comes from official sources, and they're listed at every step. You can check that yourself in phase 1 above. What you buy is the work around it: which of the 32 following steps apply to you, in which order, with which deadline, and a nudge when something needs doing.

Does this apply to my situation too?

The plan first asks who is coming along, what is coming along and how you're leaving the Netherlands. It then leaves out what doesn't apply to you, and adds what only fits your situation. Is your situation slightly different from what's written? Ask your question at the step. You'll get an answer within two working days.

What if the rules change after I buy?

Then your plan changes with them. Twice a month we check every source. Whatever changes is in your plan the same week, with the date. Your access lasts for your whole departure.
