The step-by-step plan for Suriname

Whoever has Surinamese roots — born in Suriname, or a parent or grandparent of Surinamese descent — qualifies for the PSA document: five years of visa-free travel, stays of up to six months and working without a work permit. Whoever doesn't have those roots applies before departure for a Machtiging tot Kort Verblijf (MKV, authorisation for temporary stay) and then goes through the permit chain.

And then the misunderstanding that fills whole forums: the PSA document isn't a residence status. The holder is formally not a resident — whoever wants to live there registers at the Centraal Bureau voor Burgerzaken (the civil registry), with the proof of deregistration from the Netherlands. This corridor covers both gates; the steps tell you which apply to you.

Fiscally Suriname is the mirror image of most faraway destinations: the treaty of 1975 places your occupational pension and your AOW (the Dutch state pension) exclusively with Suriname as the state of residence — the Netherlands lets go (only a government pension stays Dutch), and you apply for the exemption from wage withholding. Suriname then taxes your worldwide income, progressively up to 38%. The AOW itself travels with you at one hundred per cent thanks to the enforcement treaty of 2001, including the single person's rate.

Healthcare asks for honesty in advance: there's no CAK route, the Staatsziekenfonds (the state health fund) covers residents with a limited basic package, and for serious cases evacuation abroad may be necessary — that cover you arrange privately. Read both articles before you plan any further.

As a Dutch citizen you enter visa-free for at most ninety days, but you do pay an entry fee: US$ or € 50 for a single entry, € 75 for a multiple one, plus € 8 service fee — so € 58 or € 83. Buy it directly on the official portal: intermediaries charge tens of euros on top for exactly the same document. If you're going to explore two or three times within a quarter, the multiple voucher (valid for three months, at most five trips) is the cheapest route. Whoever has a PSA pays nothing.

And note what that voucher isn't: a right of residence. Living there you arrange via the gate from phase 2 — and whoever has no Surinamese origin or PSA has to apply for the authorisation in the Netherlands before departure.

Holiday Suriname and living Suriname are two different countries — and for returnees: the Suriname of your youth or your family is a third. Explore Paramaribo and the districts outside the high season, do an ordinary supermarket round and feel the rainy season (May to August, December to February), when roads are regularly under water.

And look honestly at the infrastructure: power cuts are a recurring fact there in 2026 too, cash machines are regularly empty and a lot of business runs in cash. Whoever knows that and still wants it — for the language, the family, the life — really wants it.

The calculator for Suriname works on your own moving choices. The paperwork here is cheap — the fees run into tens to hundreds of dollars, not thousands — and life is affordable by Dutch standards. The money is in the sea freight, the first months, and for whoever wants a car in the import levy.

Count in euros and dollars, not in SRD: rents and property are de facto dollarised there, and the Surinamese dollar is under exchange-rate pressure. Whoever has a Dutch income is protected against that — but SRD balances erode, so keep them small.

This is the step without forms, and yet this is where most journeys fail. Discuss with your partner and, depending on their age, your children: why do we want this, what are we giving up, and what is for each of us the condition for saying yes?

Suriname has one advantage that no other faraway destination has: the language. School, counter, hospital and the neighbour speak Dutch. The heavy points are the healthcare (the level and the evacuation question), the infrastructure, and for returnees the expectations of family on both sides of the ocean. And one conversation you have right now: never let yourself be naturalised as a Surinamese citizen without the nationality lesson from phase 2 — you then lose your Dutch citizenship by operation of law.

Close the orientation phase with a target date for departure. Not as a deadline — as a compass. The clocks that set the pace here: the MKV you apply for three months before departure (the PSA route is faster at two to four weeks), the sea freight, and the papers of the household goods exemption that hang on your residence title. A realistic picture: from serious decision to being settled, this journey takes most people five to ten months.
