You have left the Netherlands. The Netherlands is not done with you yet.
After the move the paperwork does not stop; it only gets quieter. A passport that expires, a tax return before 1 May, an exemption that runs out. And for those with two nationalities living outside the EU, a thirteen-year clock after which you are no longer Dutch. The upkeep calendar puts it on your dates and in your own calendar.

The rule hardly anyone knows
Do you hold another nationality besides the Dutch one, and do you live outside the Kingdom and the European Union? Then you lose Dutch nationality if for thirteen years no new passport, no ID card and no certificate of Dutch nationality has been issued to you. Automatically, without a letter.
The clock runs from the date of issue of your latest document, not from your departure. And only the issue stops it: an application still in progress does not count. With waits of months for an appointment, applying at the last moment is therefore too late.
A passport is valid for ten years. Whoever lets it expire and waits three years has lost their nationality. Your child gets their own clock at eighteen.

What is in it
- Your passport and, if it applies, the thirteen-year clock: the final day worked out from your date of issue, with the reminder a year earlier.
- Your driving licence: exchange within the EU, renew with the RDW outside it, with the Dutch correspondence address you need for that.
- The yearly tax return before 1 May, the annual statement from the CAK and the new country factor in January.
- The end date of your wage tax exemption, the ten years of your protective assessment, and the one year in which you can still insure yourself voluntarily for the AOW.
- DigiD, the proof of life, your voter registration, and what you must pass on and review with every move.
This is what a line in your calendar looks like
For someone with two nationalities, outside the EU, with a passport issued on 12 April 2019. The calendar works out the final day and puts the reminder in your calendar a year earlier.

Your Dutch nationality: have a new passport issued in time
You hold two nationalities and live outside the Kingdom and the EU. You then lose the Dutch one if for thirteen years no new passport, no ID card and no certificate of Dutch nationality has been issued to you. The clock runs from the date of issue of your latest document, and only the issue stops it, not the application. So apply well over a year ahead: the wait for an appointment runs to months.
Whoever is too late is no longer Dutch. It happens automatically and without notice.
