The residence routes to Suriname: PSA, MKV and the misunderstanding that fills forums

The PSA document gives whoever has Surinamese roots five years of visa-free travel and the right to work — but it is not a residence status. Living begins with registration as a resident, and whoever has no roots applies for an MKV three months ahead. The two gates, the chain and the nationality warning.

About no destination in this knowledge base does so much half information do the rounds as about Suriname — especially about the PSA document, which on forums seems to arrange everything and in reality does one thing very well and one thing not at all. This article sets out the two gates and the chain behind them.

Gate one: the PSA document

The Wet Personen van Surinaamse Afkomst (Persons of Surinamese Origin Act) gives rights to whoever has Surinamese roots: born in Suriname, or with at least one parent or grandparent of Surinamese origin — plus lawful spouses and minor children of those entitled to PSA.

The document costs US$ 130 or € 120 per adult (minors US$ 80 or € 70), is valid for five years and since June 2025 has been applied for exclusively digitally, with a processing time of two to four weeks. What it gives: visa-free entry without an entry fee, a stay of up to six months continuously (extendable to twelve), and — importantly — working without a work permit.

Know the two pieces of small print. The "renewal" after five years is in fact a new application with all the documents again. And above all:

The PSA document is not a residence status. The holder is formally not a resident of Suriname. Whoever wants to live there registers with the Centraal Bureau voor Burgerzaken (the civil registry) — with the international proof of deregistration from the Netherlands. A stay of more than six months without that registration is not permitted, and without registration no Staatsziekenfonds (state health fund), no household-goods exemption and no ID card.

Gate two: the MKV

Dutch citizens without Surinamese roots who want to stay longer than ninety days apply before departure for a Machtiging tot Kort Verblijf (authorisation for temporary stay, MKV) at a Surinamese embassy or the consulate — three months before the planned date of departure, and that is the clock that sets the whole planning. Converting on the spot from a tourist status is expressly not possible; that detour is a dead end.

After arrival the chain follows: deposit US$ 150 at the designated bank, report to the Vreemdelingendienst (immigration service) in Paramaribo within eight days, submit the residence application within fourteen days. The first permit is valid for at most two years, you apply for the renewal in person three months before expiry, and after five years of legal main residence the settlement permit for an indefinite period is possible (US$ 200).

There is also an in-between category: whoever is of Surinamese origin (born in Suriname or with a parent born there) but has no PSA document is exempt from the MKV and may apply directly during the stay for residence for an indefinite period.

The documents — without a translation round

What the government itself requires is strikingly short: a petition to the Minister of Justice and Police, a revenue stamp of SRD 1.50, copies of your passport pages, proof of means of subsistence and the deposit of US$ 150.

Note what is not on that list: a certificate of conduct and a medical certificate. Both are mentioned on forums as requirements, but gov.sr doesn't name them. Bring them as reserve documents — and don't let your departure planning wait on them.

For the chain after arrival you also want fresh birth certificates with apostille for the whole family and your marriage certificate, plus the international proof of deregistration from the BRP. And posts can in practice ask for more than the official list; the consular pages have been unreachable for months, so call before you submit. The windfall that no other faraway destination offers: no translation is needed — the working language of every Surinamese counter is Dutch.

The nationality warning

Naturalisation as a Surinamese citizen is possible after five years of main residence — but whoever voluntarily naturalises loses Dutch nationality by operation of law, and Suriname allows no dual nationality on naturalisation. The PSA document is precisely the legal alternative: rights in Suriname without giving up your Dutch passport. For virtually everyone in this corridor that is the right terminus.
