School in Suriname: enrolment is announced in April or May, and whoever is late waits for a place

Can your child go to school in Dutch in Suriname? Yes, and the system even carries the same names as at home: primary school is called Gewoon Lager Onderwijs, followed by MULO, HAVO and VWO, and schools are public, under government authority, or private. The find at the source is the calendar: every year in April or May the Ministry of Education announces the enrolment dates for the new school year, in the national newspapers and on radio and television, and that enrolment covers kindergarten, primary school and junior secondary education. The pitfall is placement: anyone who misses the period can go to the Primary Education Bureau until mid-October, but in October 2023 362 pupils still had to be placed at a school, and the ministry named as the reason that parents had registered their children too late.

When and where do you enrol?

Every year anew, at the school of your choice, in the period the ministry announces in April or May. The bureau that handles placement is at Dr. S. Kaffiludistraat 117-123 in Paramaribo: the Primary Education Bureau can be reached on 431335, the Junior Secondary Education Bureau on 491340, and the directorate names the enrolment and placement of pupils as its first task. Anyone moving to the interior districts of Marowijne, Brokopondo or Sipaliwini falls under the sub-directorate Education Interior, which also organises school transport.

If you leave in the summer, the enrolment period is already over when you land. Then have someone enrol locally, or contact the bureau in April to hear what is possible for a child from abroad; exactly which Dutch reports or diplomas the bureau asks for placement is not on the site, so ask beforehand and bring the originals.

Late means losing a place, not a fine. In October 2023 the ministry explained that some schools work with an AB system to avoid children having to attend a school too far from home: pupils then go in alternating groups three days a week. Anyone who knocks only in September ends up at the back of that division. Late enrolment runs until mid-October, and after that it is a wait until the next spring.

What else do you arrange for your child?

Health care. All residents, including foreigners living in Suriname, are entitled to the basic package of the basic health insurance, and the premium for a child up to and including sixteen is SRD 55 a month; how registration with the State Health Insurance Fund works is in health care in Suriname. For enrolment at school and with the fund you need the family's registration with the Central Bureau for Civil Affairs, from registration and numbers in Suriname.

The ministry is working on renewal: new textbooks in the Surinamese educational culture, digital education for the interior and vocational education focused on oil and gas, ICT, agriculture and tourism.
