Your first weeks in Suriname: two weeks for the driving permit, and the chain from decision to registration

What do you arrange first in Suriname? The report to the Aliens Service, because that is where the chain every other counter asks for begins, and the driving permit, because that clock is set at two weeks. The Suriname Police Corps is clear about it: anyone staying legally for more than two weeks drives only with a driving permit, SRD 150 in fees and SRD 350 in handling costs. The find at the source is the order the government itself prescribes on the settlement of foreigners page: first the Aliens Service, then the decision of the Minister of Justice and Police, then the CBB and the Civil Affairs Office of your place of residence. The pitfall is the health fund: the SZF treats foreigners with a valid residence permit as residents, but anyone knocking without a permit must pay twelve months of premium in advance.

What do you arrange in week one at the Aliens Service and the police?

Report to the Counter Service of the Aliens Affairs Department, mr. J. Lachmonstraat 166-168 in Paramaribo, and file the residence application: a petition to the Minister of Justice and Police, a stamp of SRD 1.50, copies of the written passport pages, proof of means of subsistence and the deposit slip for US$ 150 or the equivalent in SRD. Anyone of Surinamese origin applies straight away for residence for a fixed or indefinite term; anyone with an MKV converts it. The same week go to the Driving Licences department at the Nieuwe Haven police station with your Dutch licence, the receipt for the deposit and your passport with the entry stamp; the details are in driving licence in Suriname.

No decision, no extract; no extract, no counter. The SZF wants an extract from the CBB, the bank wants proof of address from the population register, and the Population Register only registers you after the minister's decision. Anyone who spends the first week on the beach pushes the whole chain back. Bring the international proof of deregistration from the Netherlands in your hand luggage, because the Civil Affairs Office asks for it on settlement from abroad.

What do you do in weeks two to four at the CBB?

As soon as the decision is in, report to the Aliens Affairs department of the Central Bureau for Civil Affairs and then to the Civil Affairs Office of your place of residence. From the Population Register you then request the extracts the other counters want: an ordinary extract, a family extract and the extract for the State Health Insurance Fund, the AOV or the driving licence, SRD 1 per statement at the counter. When can you go to the health fund, the bank and the Tax Administration?

At the SZF you register with a valid identity document at the head office or a district office, with all family members to be insured present; with a valid residence permit the application runs as a resident's, and without an ID card you show your passport. The minimum premium of the basic health insurance is SRD 165 a month from 21 to 59 and SRD 240 from 60; the rates of the voluntary personal insurance are in health care in Suriname. For a current account in SRD, dollars or euros De Surinaamsche Bank asks for a valid passport plus a second identity document or the PSA document, proof of address from the population register, proof of income or assets and an e-mail address; how your AOW and pension arrive there is in money, bank and exchange rate in Suriname. Anyone receiving AOW who wants payment per quarter or per year contacts the SVB office at the Dutch embassy in Paramaribo. The tax identification number you request online from the Tax Administration; you need it for the return on your worldwide income from AOW, pension and tax in Suriname.

What do you deliberately leave for later?

Land and a car. Grondhuur you only get as a resident, and buying without a title search is the most expensive mistake in Suriname, see land and housing in Suriname. Putting a car in your name requires a CBB extract and insurance, and from October 2026 inspection and insurance are enforced; rent for the first month.
