What does emigrating to Luxembourg cost?
Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. Every item shows whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. On the paper side this is a small route: two reports at the commune, a stamp of 50 euros for the car, and a driving licence you at most have registered for free. The money sits in the home and in life itself. Think of the deposit, the rent, and with a purchase the 7 percent duties, of which the Bëllegen Akt takes off a part. This model doesn't pretend Luxembourg is cheap.

A rough indication for your situation
A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.
Count on a total of
€ 4.100 – € 9.500
Where does that difference come from?
- The first months€ 4.000 – € 9.000
Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.
- Aanvraag en papieren
- € 25 – € 150
- De verhuizing
- € 30 – € 150
- De eerste maanden
- € 4.000 – € 9.300
Every item, one by onePer item the amount, the source and whether it's a rate or an estimate
Aanvraag en papieren
- Report and registration at the commune(estimate)€ 5 – € 30
- Certificates, model forms and translations(estimate)€ 20 – € 100
De verhuizing
- The journey(estimate)€ 30 – € 150
De eerste maanden
- The first months(estimate)€ 4.000 – € 9.000
This is the heaviest item of the whole journey. It consists of a deposit of at most two months' rent, the first rent, furnishing what didn't come along, and the months in which you still have double costs. In and around the city renting costs more than in the Randstad. The north and the south around Esch sit below that, but nothing in Luxembourg sits low.
- Bank, phone and the first counters(estimate)€ 60 – € 250
And if you buy a house?
This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.
If you buy, count on 3 to 9% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 7.500 to € 22.500.
The state charges 7 percent on purchase: 6 percent registration duties and 1 percent transcription duties. Whoever is going to live in the home themselves gets a tax credit on that, the Bëllegen Akt. It is 40,000 euros per acquirer, 80,000 for a couple. The condition is that you move in within two years and stay at least two years. The state always keeps at least 100 euros. On top come the notary and possibly the estate agent. With the credit you sit at the bottom of the range, without the credit at the top.
Note: buying isn't simply allowed here
There is no restriction on nationality and you need no permit. The credit is per person and applies once. Whoever used it before pays the full 7 percent. Whoever leaves the home within two years pays it back. Have the notary apply for the credit before signing.
An order of magnitude based on averages, not a quote. The real amounts depend on your occupation, your route, the season and dozens of choices you still have to make.
The rates in this calculation haven't been checked against the official sources yet.
