What does emigrating to Morocco cost?
Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. On the application side Morocco is cheap: the residence card costs tens of euros, not thousands. The money sits in two other items: the first months and the car. One thing we state honestly. Moroccan customs publishes the conditions for exemption, but no removal prices. So those items are estimates with a substantiation, not checked rates.

A rough indication for your situation
A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.
Count on a total of
€ 2.000 – € 6.400
Where does that difference come from?
- The first months€ 1.800 – € 4.500
Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.
- Aanvraag en papieren
- € 100 – € 550
- De verhuizing
- € 60 – € 350
- De eerste maanden
- € 1.800 – € 5.500
Every item, one by onePer item the amount, the source and whether it's a rate or an estimate
Aanvraag en papieren
- Carte d'immatriculation(estimate)€ 20 – € 150
- Documents, apostilles and translations(estimate)€ 80 – € 400
The amount depends mostly on the number of documents. Morocco is party to the apostille convention. Legalisation, having a document officially recognised, therefore stays limited to an apostille from the court (€ 27 per document, 2026 rate). On top comes the translation: Moroccan counters want French or Arabic documents, sworn translated. Count on € 40 to 90 per document. A family with a marriage certificate and two birth certificates quickly reaches four documents. Whoever has their Moroccan nationality established because the parents' certificates are missing can end up well above this. That is a file, not a form.
De verhuizing
- Flights(estimate)€ 60 – € 350
On this route the spread is larger than on most. Outside the season and with hand luggage only it's a budget-airline hop. In the summer holidays and with ample luggage you pay a multiple of that. The amount is for one way from Amsterdam or Rotterdam to Casablanca, Marrakesh, Tangier or Agadir.
De eerste maanden
- The first months(estimate)€ 1.800 – € 4.500
This item consists of the deposit and rent paid in advance, furnishing what didn't come along, and the months in which you still have double costs. Renting is low by Dutch standards. Outside the tourist centres an apartment sits well below what you're used to in the Netherlands. But Marrakesh, Tangier and the coast around Agadir have a separate, much more expensive market for foreigners. Count with a margin, and count on the first months being more expensive than the months after.
- Bank, phone and the first counters(estimate)€ 60 – € 250
- Sorting out the driving licence(estimate)€ 30 – € 700
Count on a lesson package with theory and practical exams. You may drive on your Dutch licence for one year at most. After that it is the exam or an exchange. For foreigners the exchange has two openings, and both are closed for a Dutch licence. There is no Dutch-Moroccan driving-licence treaty, and the Netherlands does not exchange a Moroccan licence either. Whoever is Moroccan as well and returns for good may exchange: that paperwork is the bottom of the range. The top is the examination route.
And if you buy a house?
This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.
If you buy, count on 5 to 8% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 12.500 to € 20.000.
The costs are the registration duties, the notary and the entry in the titre foncier (the title deed) at the Conservation Foncière, the Moroccan land registry. Unlike in Spain or Turkey, another question first decides here whether you may buy at all. See the restriction below.
Note: buying isn't simply allowed here
A foreigner may not acquire agricultural land in Morocco. That ban also extends to a home standing on agricultural land, even if it was built long ago. If you hold Moroccan nationality alongside the Dutch, you buy under that nationality and fall outside the ban. So check the designation of the plot with the ANCFCC, the national land registry agency, before you pay a deposit. Urban, agricultural or collective (land of a tribal community): that is the difference between a valid purchase and an invalid one.
An order of magnitude based on averages, not a quote. The real amounts depend on your occupation, your route, the season and dozens of choices you still have to make.
The rates in this calculation haven't been checked against the official sources yet.
