Working on Sint Eustatius: free, in English, and without a safety net
Dutch citizens may work freely on Sint Eustatius, and the minimum wage is $ 10.61 an hour. But the island has 3,200 residents, the working language is English, unemployment insurance does not yet exist, social relief requires five years of residence, and pension is a bargaining point outside the employers affiliated with PCN. The honest story about working on a small island, with what is arranged for illness, dismissal and your own business.
Working on Sint Eustatius is barrier-free for Dutch citizens: the declaration by operation of law confirms that you may lawfully live and work, without a work permit and without a waiting period. The employment conditions behind it are not, and on Statia a second layer comes on top that Bonaire does not have: a labour market of 3,200 people, on which English is the language of business and government and every sector counts a handful of employers.
The wage: indexed, and still tight
The statutory minimum wage is set per island and amounts on Sint Eustatius in 2026 to $ 10.61 an hour, after an indexation of 1.9%; Bonaire is at $ 10.69 and Saba at $ 10.66, and what it is per week or month depends on the hours worked. That amount is also the yardstick the IND applies on admission. Whoever weighs a job offer does not convert to euros but to the island itself: what does renting cost, what does electricity cost, and what is left.
The safety net that is not there
This is the core of this article, and on Statia it is identical to Bonaire. In the Caribbean Netherlands there is no unemployment insurance; the RCN writes it itself: there is currently no benefit for employees who lose their job. The only safety net is social relief, and it has a condition that excludes newcomers: eighteen or older and either born on the islands or five years lawfully and continuously resident in the Caribbean Netherlands. The basic amount of social relief on Sint Eustatius is $ 267 per two weeks, plus supplements, and never more than the minimum wage. A plaster is coming: the Temporary Unemployment Provision BES, a benefit of at most three months for employees who lose their whole job through no fault of their own and worked at least one hour in 26 weeks of the ten months before; civil servants are excluded. A plaster, not a system. The practical conclusion: your buffer in the bank is your unemployment insurance, and on an island with one employer per trade six months of fixed costs is not a luxury but a minimum.
What is arranged?
| Situation | What applies |
|---|---|
| Minimum wage Sint Eustatius 2026 | $ 10.61 an hour |
| Working as a Dutch citizen | with the declaration by operation of law, no work permit |
| Ill | employer continues to pay at least 80% of the daily wage; report to the employer, the insurance doctor calls within two working days |
| Dismissal through no fault of your own | one-off cessantia from the employer; on bankruptcy from SZW, apply within a year |
| Dismissal by the employer | only with a dismissal permit via the dismissal committee; summary dismissal contested at the court |
| Maternity leave | sixteen weeks on full pay, twenty for a multiple birth |
| Unemployed | temporary provision in preparation: at most three months |
| Social relief Sint Eustatius | 18+, born on the islands or five years resident; basic amount $ 267 per two weeks |
| RCN unit SZW on Statia | Mazinga Square, Monday to Thursday from 8 to 12, afternoons by appointment |
When ill you report to your employer; on Sint Eustatius and Saba that used to go through the occupational health nurse, but since 2021 the employer reports the absence digitally to the RCN unit SZW and the insurance doctor calls you within two working days. If you are dismissed through no fault of your own, the cessantia is compulsory. The RCN unit SZW on Statia is at Mazinga Square and is open Monday to Thursday mornings; the Public Entity's Labour Department at Breedeweg 10 helps with job placement, but social relief and work permits run through the RCN.
Pension: read what is not in your contract
The Caribbean Netherlands Pension Fund runs an average-salary scheme with an accrual of 1.75% of the pension base per year, and has an office at Mazinga Square in Oranjestad. But that fund is only there for whoever works for an affiliated employer; outside it the Caribbean Netherlands has no automatic pension accrual, and an employer pension is an employment condition to negotiate. Add that your Dutch AOW accrual stops and the Caribbean AOV only accrues from your settling, and the pension gap becomes the quiet main question of this emigration.
Ask about the pension before you sign, not after. An employment condition that is not in at the start rarely gets in later, and every year without accrual counts double: no AOW, no employer pension.
Starting your own: the permit and the legal form
Doing business is possible, with the Business Establishment Act BES as the framework: whoever wants to establish, take over or substantially change a business applies to the Public Entity for a business establishment permit, and the Chamber of Commerce Sint Eustatius and Saba names three requirements: sufficient knowledge of the activities, sufficient capital, and no conflict with the public interest. Mind the legal form: a sole proprietorship on Statia is only possible for whoever lives permanently on the island and is registered at the Census Office, and an NV or BV is set up through the notary. The Chamber is at Ada de Veer Southern Road 2 and is open on working days from 9 to 16. Whoever keeps Dutch clients at a distance starts on a market of this size with a head start.
In Vertrekklaar this is phase 1 of 5 of the journey, step 1.2: the same steps, but for your situation — in your order, tickable, and with the deadlines watched. See the whole journey to Sint Eustatius or go straight to step 1.2 in the open plan.

The five keys to America: which routes really exist?
There is no general emigration route to the United States. You need a specific key: an employer, a business of your own, extraordinary talent, family, or luck in the lottery. This is what each route demands — and why ESTA is none of them.
