Your driving licence on Sint Eustatius: recognised, valid for five years and a driving test if you wait too long
Your Dutch driving licence is recognised as equivalent to the island licence on Sint Eustatius: no exchange is needed as long as it is valid. If it expires you have two routes: a Statia licence at the Census Office for $ 37, valid for five years, with a health certificate from a doctor on the island, or renewal at the RDW from abroad for € 36.40. The trap is in article 106 of the traffic ordinance: whoever lets a licence lapse for more than two years must prove driving competence again.
Yes, with your Dutch driving licence you simply keep driving on Sint Eustatius. The Road Traffic Ordinance Sint Eustatius 2022 says it in article 108: licences issued in the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten or the public entities Saba and Sint Eustatius are recognised as equivalent to the island's licence. What it costs: nothing, as long as your licence is valid. The trap is at the expiry date, and on Statia it is sharper than on Bonaire: whoever lets a licence from within the Kingdom lapse for more than two years must, under article 106, submit a certificate of driving competence again.
How long may you drive on your Dutch licence?
As long as it is valid. The ordinance sets no term and no exchange obligation for licences from within the Kingdom; the recognition is unconditional. For whoever comes from outside the Kingdom it is different: a foreign licence entitles you under article 109 to a permit from the Island Governor for at most three months, meant for temporary stays. That makes Statia different from the EU countries, where the country of residence takes over your licence as soon as it expires. Here nothing changes on arrival, and what does change you only notice at the expiry date.
What do you do when your licence expires?
Two routes, both checked at the source.
Route 1: a licence from the island. The Census Office at Chapel Piece Road 1 handles the applications; the Fees Ordinance 2021 charges $ 37 for a licence and $ 23 for a duplicate. For a first issue the ordinance requires a certificate of physical and mental fitness from a doctor licensed on Sint Eustatius, no older than two months, and a certificate of competence from the body that assesses driving skill. Whoever hands in a valid or recently expired Dutch licence does not submit the latter certificate; if the validity of the Dutch, Aruban, Curaçao or Sint Maarten licence expired more than two years ago, they do. The island licence is valid for five years from the day of issue, and has the categories A1 and A2 for mopeds and motorcycles, B for passenger cars up to 3,500 kilos, C and D for goods and passenger transport, and the E categories for a heavy trailer.
Route 2: renewal at the RDW from abroad. The RDW renews a Dutch licence if you live in a country outside the European Union or the European Free Trade Association, are not registered at a Dutch address, hold an EU or EFTA nationality and give a Dutch correspondence address; the RDW sends no post abroad. The Caribbean Netherlands has the status of overseas country and territory towards the EU, so you meet that first condition. You request the form, which goes to your correspondence address within ten working days, send the original back with a passport photo no older than six months, a copy of your passport and your licence, and pay € 36.40. The RDW assesses within ten working days and sends the new licence within five working days to the Dutch address. For category C or D a medical examination by a CBR doctor is required.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
| Route | Cost | Term or validity |
|---|---|---|
| Keep driving on a valid Dutch licence | nothing | until the expiry date, no exchange obligation |
| Licence from outside the Kingdom, temporary stay | permit from the Island Governor | at most 3 months |
| Island licence at the Census Office | $ 37 | valid 5 years from issue |
| Duplicate on loss | $ 23 | — |
| Health certificate with the application | doctor on Sint Eustatius | no older than 2 months |
| Dutch licence expired more than 2 years ago | certificate of driving competence required | — |
| Renewal at the RDW from abroad | € 36.40 | form 10 working days, assessment 10 working days, dispatch 5 working days |
Which route suits you?
Whoever keeps family or a fixed address in the Netherlands and still drives regularly in Europe often chooses the RDW route: the licence remains a Dutch document with the Dutch validity period, and nobody on Statia keeps it. Whoever stays on the island for good chooses the island licence: one visit to the Census Office, on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday until half past three or on Wednesday and Friday until twelve, and a card every local body knows. Mind the five-year term, which is shorter than you are used to, and the ID card you must carry anyway.
Never let your licence lapse for more than two years. On Bonaire you simply exchange an expired Dutch licence; on Statia article 106 demands a certificate of driving competence again after two years, and the RDW form comes by post via the Netherlands. Put the expiry date in your diary today.
And the car itself?
The licence is the easy part. Taking the car along is a customs sum with a twelve-month ownership requirement and a progressive ABB rate that differs on the Windward Islands from Bonaire; that is in your car to Sint Eustatius. Where the licence falls in the order of your arrival, you see in the step-by-step plan for Sint Eustatius.
In Vertrekklaar this is phase 5 of 5 of the journey, step 5.7: the same steps, but for your situation — in your order, tickable, and with the deadlines watched. See the whole journey to Sint Eustatius or go straight to step 5.7 in the open plan.

Buying a house on Sint Eustatius: 5% on purchase, 0.7% without surcharges and a Land Registry at Fort Oranje
Buying on Sint Eustatius goes the way it should in the Caribbean Netherlands: through the notary, with 5% transfer tax and a Land Registry that has come under the Dutch Kadaster since 2021, with an office at Fort Oranje 5. After that one question counts: do you live there yourself? The owner-occupied home is exempt from property tax; a second home pays 0.7%, without the surcharges Bonaire does levy. And whoever builds reckons with the island's fees and with a hurricane that passes by once every two years.

Children and school on Sint Eustatius: English-language Caribbean education, one secondary school and $ 227 child benefit
The schools on Sint Eustatius come under the Dutch Inspectorate of Education, but the education is in English: four small primary schools and one secondary school, the Gwendoline van Putten School, which has run the Caribbean CXC examination system since 2015 instead of havo, vwo or mbo. Compulsory education runs from 4 to 16 with a qualification obligation to 18, child benefit is $ 227 a month and only comes on application, and childcare costs $ 75 a month in 2026. Studying means leaving.

Healthcare on Sint Eustatius: insured without premium, and 2,500 medical referrals a year
On Sint Eustatius you are insured as a resident by operation of law, without premium and without excess. But the island is small: what the care on Statia cannot do goes as a medical referral to Sint Maarten, and after that to Bonaire, Curaçao or Aruba, Colombia and the Netherlands, with flight, accommodation and daily allowance in the package. In 2025 that was 2,501 referrals from an island of 3,200 people. The flip side: a dental package that is almost empty from the age of eighteen, and a transition gap you insure yourself.
