Banking and paying on Sint Eustatius: the dollar, one bank on the island and the guarantee up to $ 25,000

On Sint Eustatius the dollar has been legal tender since 1 January 2011, and a transfer from the Netherlands is not a SEPA payment but an international payment with extra costs. The island has one bank branch, of the Windward Islands Bank, which opens accounts digitally. What you need: a registration, your ID card and the CRIB number the Tax Administration creates automatically. What you get: a deposit guarantee up to $ 25,000 per person per bank since 2025.

Yes, you open a local bank account on Sint Eustatius, and you want one too. The currency is the US dollar, legal tender on the three islands since 1 January 2011, and your Dutch euro account works here as a foreign account: the government wrote in answer to parliamentary questions that local banks charge extra commissions for transfers in euros, comparable to the rates for transfers outside the SEPA area. What makes Statia different from Bonaire with its three banks is the choice: the island has one bank branch, of the Windward Islands Bank. What you get back is more security than you think: since 1 January 2025 the deposit guarantee protects your balance up to $ 25,000 per person per bank.

Why does your Dutch account only half work here?

The Caribbean Netherlands belongs constitutionally to the Netherlands, but has the status of overseas country and territory towards the European Union. The European payment accounts directive therefore does not apply there: there is no European right to a basic payment account, and a Dutch bank may refuse or close a euro account for whoever no longer lives in the European Netherlands. In practice: keep your Dutch account for what stays behind in the Netherlands, such as your pension and your tax return, ask your bank in writing before departure whether the account may stay open with an address on Sint Eustatius, and let salary and fixed costs run in dollars as soon as possible. On the island itself the common credit and debit cards are accepted, but American Express nowhere, and ATMs dispense dollars.

What do you need to open an account?

The order of your first weeks determines when the bank can help you. The ID card is the island's identity document, compulsory from the age of twelve, and is only issued to people registered on Sint Eustatius. The Tax Administration Caribbean Netherlands creates the CRIB number automatically for every resident between 15 and 65, after you have registered; you collect it in person at the desk of the tax office on H.M. Queen Beatrix Road, on working days between 9 and 13, with your identity document, and take it with you straight away. Your employer needs that number for the payroll and you need it yourself for every payment to the Tax Administration.

The Windward Islands Bank, part of the Maduro & Curiel's Group, has a branch on St. Eustatius and opens accounts digitally, with identification and signing online, for a current account in US$ or in Caribbean guilders. Which proof of income and address the bank asks of a resident is deliberately not stated here; for non-residents the bank itself names a passport, proof of address no older than three months, proof of income, proof of local ties and a reference letter, and a personal visit to finalise the account. Count on a comparable list, and on a turnaround of days to weeks.

ID card only after registration; $ 15, valid five years

The deposit guarantee is free and automatic: should a bank fail, De Nederlandsche Bank reimburses balances on current and savings accounts and term deposits up to the maximum, per person or business and per bank, regardless of the number of accounts. On an island with one bank that also means: whoever holds more than $ 25,000 does not spread locally but leaves the part that belongs in the Netherlands there under the Dutch guarantee.

One bank is also one counter. On Bonaire you choose between three banks; on Statia you do not. Arrange the digital application with the Windward Islands Bank as soon as your ID card is there, and keep your Dutch account open in the meantime, because the IND fees and the utility company's deposit do not wait for a local card.

What do you arrange in the first weeks?

First the registration and the ID card, then the CRIB number at the desk, and only then the bank. Bring your ID card and your passport, and the documents the bank names after the digital application. Then switch your salary, the rent and STUCO's deposit to the dollar account, and keep the euro account for the Netherlands.
