Your dog or cat may come to Bermuda. You need an import permit in advance, and your pet needs a chip and two rabies vaccinations: the second 6 to 12 months after the first. So an animal younger than 10 months cannot enter. A titre test, a blood test for rabies, is not required. The health certificate is at most 10 days old on arrival. Bermuda has no quarantine: if something is not right, your pet goes straight back, at your expense.
What does Bermuda require?
The rules come from Veterinary Services, part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
| Requirement | What applies | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Import Permit | apply in advance with the form and the vet's papers | answer usually within 2 business days; valid 10 days from the date of the certificate |
| Chip | ISO, FECAVA, European/international or AVID-USA | before departure |
| Rabies, first shot | at or after the age of 3 months | |
| Rabies, second shot | 6 to 12 months after the first, without a significant lapse | the latest shot at least 30 days and at most 12 months before arrival |
| Age | at least 10 months; an animal with only one shot cannot enter | |
| Health certificate | from a licensed vet in the Netherlands: free of communicable disease and external parasites | at most 10 days before arrival |
| Tick treatment | given by the vet during the examination, with a product from the list | at the examination |
| Rabies statement | the animal has not been exposed to rabies or been in a rabies area in the last 6 months | 6 months |
| Foot-and-mouth disease | not within 30 miles of foot-and-mouth disease | the last 30 days |
| Titre test | not required | |
| Quarantine | does not exist |
Why two rabies shots?
Bermuda wants to see the two most recent vaccinations. The first was given at or after the age of three months. The second follows 6 to 12 months after the first. There must be no significant lapse. On arrival the latest shot is at least 30 days and at most 12 months old. Bring the original vaccination certificates: the vet may only sign for shots they gave themselves, or for which they see the original certificate.
Does your pet get a rabies vaccine that lasts three years? Then the last two shots are often too far apart, and the latest is soon more than a year old. For a three-year vaccine, Bermuda asks you to contact them first. So email animals@gov.bm early. If you have to start again, you need two shots 6 to 12 months apart, and the latest at least 30 days before arrival. In that case, allow at least seven months.
What do you arrange in the Netherlands?
Start with your vet. They check the chip and the vaccinations, and plan the last appointment within ten days before your arrival. At that appointment:
- The examination and the certificate. With your pet's name, date of birth, breed, description and chip number, the current owner, and your name and address in Bermuda.
- The tick treatment. The vet gives it themselves, during the examination. Bravecto, Simparica, NexGard and Frontline are on the list. Advantage, Advocate, Revolution, Capstar, Comfortis, shampoos and collars are not accepted.
- The signature. A handwritten ink signature with practice stamp, or a digital one. With a digital signature, the practice emails the papers to Bermuda itself.
You then send the application form with the papers to animals@gov.bm (441-236-4201). The office is closed at weekends and on public holidays. The permit is valid for 10 days from the date of the certificate. So the examination, the application and your arrival all fall within ten days.
Bermuda asks for a certificate from a licensed vet, not a government stamp. Whether the NVWA must still sign anything, we could not check in the NVWA Export Assistant. Look it up yourself, or email dpp@nvwa.nl. The NVWA aims to reply within two working days.
May every breed come?
No. A number of breeds may not enter Bermuda at all, including the Dogo Argentino, Boerboel, Fila Brasileiro, Cane Corso, Neapolitan Mastiff, Presa Canario, Tosa Inu, the wolf and the wolf hybrid, and crosses of these.
A second list is only allowed with prior approval and a securely fenced property, which an Animal Warden inspects before you get the permit. It includes the Akita, Rottweiler, Dobermann, Bullmastiff, Chow Chow, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Belgian Malinois, the Bouvier des Flandres and all shepherd breeds, including the German. A rare breed may also be refused. See the full list on the government page.
What happens on arrival?
Bring a printout of the permit and the original certificates for Customs. You declare your pet on the Customs Traveller Declaration, or, if it travels as cargo, on a Bermuda Customs Declaration.
| What | Amount or consequence |
|---|---|
| Import duty | 25% of the animal's value |
| Wharfage | 1.25% extra |
| Permit | the cost is not on the government pages |
| Papers not in order (by air) | the animal goes straight back, at your expense; you may have to travel with it |
| Return not possible | the animal may be seized and put down |
You state your pet's value with, for example, the receipt. You register a dog for a dog licence immediately after arrival, at the DENR head office in the Botanical Gardens in Paget. In the National Parks your dog is always on a lead of at most three metres, and on public beaches it is only allowed from 1 November to 31 March.
How do you later return to the Netherlands?
Bermuda is on the European list of countries without a blood test requirement. So for the way back you need no titre test.
If you live in Bermuda for longer, your pet will get its next rabies shot there. A shot entered in the EU pet passport outside the EU is not valid, according to the NVWA. Your pet then travels back with an EU animal health certificate, signed by an official vet in Bermuda.
What else can come along in the move, you can read in household goods to Bermuda. How the return works otherwise, you can read in moving back to the Netherlands.
In Vertrekklaar this is phase 4 of 5 of the journey, step 4.4: the same steps, but for your situation — in your order, tickable, and with the deadlines watched. See the whole journey to Bermuda or go straight to step 4.4 in the open plan.

Dog or cat to Albania: easy on the way out with a chip and rabies jab, but a titre test for the way back
Your dog or cat can come to Albania with a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and the EU pet passport. Albania probably also asks for a health certificate from an official vet, valid for ten days. A titre test is not needed on the way out. It is for the way back: Albania is not on the EU list. So have the test done in the Netherlands before you leave.

Your pet to Andorra: the EU passport is enough, no blood test, and into the RAC within two months
Your dog, cat or ferret travels from the Netherlands into Andorra with a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and the EU pet passport. A titre test is not needed, not even for the return journey, because Andorra is on the EU list of countries with equivalent rules. After arrival you register the animal free of charge in the Andorran RAC register within two months. For dogs a dog tax per parish follows, and for dangerous breeds an insurance and muzzle obligation.
