The first weeks in Belize: extend every 30 days, and do not stay away too long for a year

In your first weeks in Belize two clocks run. As a visitor you get 30 days and then extend by 30 days at a time, for BZ$ 200 each time. And anyone who wants permanent residence may spend at most 14 days in total outside Belize in the first year. On top of that come the deadlines for your household goods, your pet and, in the QRP programme, your deposit and your stay.

The first weeks in Belize revolve around one rhythm: as a visitor you get 30 days on arrival, and after that you extend by 30 days at a time at the immigration department, for BZ$ 200 each time. Anyone who wants to apply for permanent residence after a year also counts every day outside Belize: during that year you may spend no more than 14 in total. Your other deadlines depend on your route.

What do you do in the first days?

Register your arrival online with the immigration department; NederlandWereldwijd advises this, for arrival and for departure. If you travel with a dog or cat, you will have notified BAHA of your flight two working days in advance, and a vet inspects the animal on arrival. The emergency number in Belize is 911. There is no Dutch embassy: the embassy is in Mexico City, and there is an honorary consul in Belize City.

When do you extend?

You apply for the extension at an immigration office, before your 30 days are up. You get 30 extra days, for BZ$ 200. With that extension you may not work, paid or unpaid, and you may not engage in a business or profession without the consent of the Director of Immigration. The immigration department names it explicitly for people investigating the possibilities of settlement. Put the end date in your diary each time.

Every trip counts. For permanent residence you must, at the time of applying, have lived legally in Belize for a year and spent no more than 14 days in total outside the country during that year. A few weeks in the Netherlands may mean you only meet that requirement later. So plan visits to Belize, not the other way round.

What applies in the QRP programme?

You have your QRP card scanned once at the immigration department. After that it counts in Belize as proof of your status; at the border you travel on your passport. Under the Act you deposit US$ 2,000 each month by the 15th, or the whole year's US$ 24,000 by 1 April, with a bank in Belize. Each year you spend at least 30 consecutive days in Belize, and you renew before 31 December. Anyone who misses a deposit loses their exemptions.

You import your household goods and car duty-free in the first year. Send the list of your household goods and the papers of your car to the Belize Tourism Board three weeks before import.

What do you prepare for the end of the first year?

For permanent residence you need a police record from Belize that is valid for six months, and a medical examination by a doctor in Belize. So do not request the record too early. From the first month, keep your lease, utility bills and bank statements: with them you prove your address and your income. See registration and numbers.

What do you watch for if you arrive in hurricane season?

Tropical storms come mainly from June to November. NEMO, the disaster agency, advises leaving islands and beaches as early as possible in a hurricane, and keeps a list of shelters. Pets are not allowed in them. Look up the nearest shelter in your first week, and store water and food for a few days. How to choose where to live is in renting in Belize.
