The container to Curaçao: what the crossing costs, and how the exemption works
Your household contents cross the ocean by sea container — count on weeks of sailing time and thousands of euros. Customs grants an exemption from import taxes for used household goods, but only whoever knows the conditions (six months of ownership, an inventory list with values, declaration within six months) benefits from it.
Curaçao isn't by the roadside. What is a lorry for Spain or France is a sea container here: weeks on the water, a customs service on the other side, and a schedule in which the sailing time sets the clock. This is the item that carries your Curaçao budget — and the place where one form makes the difference between exemption and the full rate.
The crossing: time and money
The sea leg Rotterdam–Willemstad takes roughly two to three weeks; door to door, with loading, customs and delivery included, count on four to six weeks for a container of your own and longer for groupage. Plan your temporary accommodation on that: you sleep the first weeks without your things, and that's how it is.
The costs are steep and vary per provider. Platform indications (2026): a 20-foot container from port to port from around € 3,000, fully handled from door to door more like € 6,000 to € 9,500; a 40-footer above that; a groupage load around € 225–350 per cubic metre. Ask for three quotes for the same inventory, and ask explicitly what is not included — the insurance (around 2% of the value of the contents) and the local costs on Curaçao are the items the bill overruns on.
The exemption: free, but on conditions
Customs Curaçao grants on request an exemption from all import taxes — import duties, excise duties and turnover tax — for removal goods. The conditions come straight from the official brochure:
- It concerns used, personal goods that have been part of your household contents for at least six months; Customs may ask for purchase receipts. New things fall outside it and are simply taxed.
- You are moving your normal place of residence to Curaçao — which is why your passport stamp, your Kranshi registration and your proof of deregistration from the Netherlands go into the file.
- A signed inventory list with values stated goes with it. Make that list while packing, per box — reconstructing it afterwards is the kind of job nobody starts on.
- The declaration must be made within six months of your move, and you may not sell, let or lend the exempted goods for twelve months without permission.
Drink above a normal household stock, tobacco, pleasure craft and sports or hobby vehicles fall outside the exemption. And the car is a story of its own with a stricter ownership requirement — that has its own article.
In practice: a mover who sails the route often usually arranges the customs clearance in days once the papers are right. So the critical path is you yourself — the inventory list, the proof of deregistration and the Kranshi registration. Whoever has those three in order pays not a cent of tax on their entire household contents.

Your car to Curaçao: one exemption, twelve months of ownership, otherwise the full rate
One passenger car per family may come along tax-free — provided it was in your possession and use for twelve months before shipment. Whoever falls outside that pays import levies that usually tip the sum towards: buy there.

Tax and the penshonado scheme: the two-month clock nobody knows about
Your AOW (the Dutch state pension) travels to Curaçao in full — including the single person's rate. And for pensioners there's the penshonado scheme: 10% on your foreign income, provided you make the request within two months of registration and buy a home within eighteen months. Whoever misses the clocks pays the full rate.

Buying a house on Curaçao: the notary arranges it — and the OZB is charged in bands
On Curaçao you buy through the notary, who executes the deed and settles the transfer tax on completion. After that comes the annual property tax: a banded rate of 0.4 to 0.6 per cent on the register value the Inspectie determines. And because many homes stand on long-lease land, the long-lease check is just as important here as the structural survey.
