Your first weeks on Curaçao: five days for Kranshi, three working days to the sédula, and the clocks that start after that

The first weeks on Curaçao are not a list of loose chores but one chain in which every link wants to see the previous one, and the first link has the shortest deadline: whoever settles for at least four months is at Kranshi within five days, by appointment, with the declaration by operation of law, the tenancy agreement and a proof of deregistration from the Netherlands at most six months old. Three working days later you collect the sédula (XCG 15), and only then can you continue: the CRIB number at the Tax Administration, the proof of registration for the bvz, the bank. The find in the customs brochure is a clock almost nobody knows: you must declare your household goods for import within six months of transferring your residence, or the exemption lapses. And for whoever comes retired another one ticks: the penshonado request must be in within two months of registration. The pitfall is therefore not one desk, but the order and the diary.

What do I do in the first week?

One thing: Kranshi. Registration is free, only by appointment, and asks for a complete file: passport, the declaration by operation of law (with at least four months' validity left, and the passport stamped), the tenancy or purchase agreement or the written permission of the main occupant, the proof of deregistration from the Netherlands (no older than six months), your original birth certificate (no older than a year) and, from eighteen, a proof of marital status at most six months old. Minor children come along to the appointment. If everything is in order you are registered on the spot; the confirming documents are ready three working days later.

The customs brochure also names a duty to "report to the population department within two weeks of arrival"; the five days of the digital desk are stricter, so keep to those.

What follows in the second and third week?

With the registration processed the queue begins. The sédula you apply for in person, from three working days after your registration, by appointment; the photo is taken on the spot and the card is issued immediately, for XCG 15 (children aged 12 to 17: XCG 1). Whoever was born abroad must have had the declaration by operation of law registered at Kranshi at least a week before the sédula application, and that has already happened at registration.

After that, doable in one day: the CRIB number by e-mail at the Tax Administration (scan of your sédula, name, address), the bank with your sédula and proof of registration, and the proof of registration for the bvz, with which you can go to the GP and pharmacy; as a resident you are insured from your registration, and the premium of 13.6% runs through your employer or your assessment. From that moment your bridging insurance from the Netherlands can be cancelled. Your driving licence you register for free online, whenever it suits.

Which clocks keep running after that?

Two deadlines start at your registration and belong in your diary before you unpack the boxes. Customs wants the import declaration of your household goods within six months after you transferred your normal residence; if special circumstances make that impossible, you request an extension from the Inspector at least a month before expiry. After the exemption you may not lend, pledge, let or transfer the goods for twelve months without permission. And the tax office: whoever wants the penshonado scheme submits the request within two months of registration to the Tax Inspector, in the middle of the busiest weeks of the landing.

What is the pitfall?

The proof of deregistration from the Netherlands is the paper the chain gets stuck on. Kranshi wants it no older than six months, and customs wants the original for the household-goods exemption. Whoever did not ask for it at the municipality chases it from the island while sédula, bank and employer wait.

The declaration by operation of law you preferably submit from the Netherlands already: the admissions organisation has four months, and as a Dutch citizen you may await that decision on Curaçao.
