What does it cost to close things off properly in the Netherlands?

Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. Each item says whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. Costs in your new country aren't included. One thing we say honestly: the premium for voluntary AOW insurance depends on your income, so that item has no amount.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?

Deliberately no amount here

  • Exporting, transferring or suspending the car

There is no amount here. After you deregister, no car may stay in your name: you deregister it for export, or someone who is registered in the Netherlands puts it in their name. On export you sometimes get part of the bpm back, only if the car is registered in another EU or EEA country within 13 weeks. If you stay registered, you can suspend the car: the RDW charges € 88.05 for one year, € 117.15 for two and € 146.25 for three years, for a passenger car up to 15 years old.

  • A conversation with a tax adviser who knows both countries

There is no amount here, because it depends on your situation and on the adviser. It pays off especially if you keep a house in the Netherlands, have a bv or a pension, keep working for a Dutch employer, or have already left while still registered with income or a business. One conversation before you leave is usually cheaper than a choice you have to reverse afterwards.

  • Healthcare between your Dutch end date and your new cover

There is no amount here, because it depends entirely on your new country and your situation. If you'll work there, you're usually insured there and only bridge the weeks until your contract starts. With a Dutch pension or a Dutch benefit you may arrange your healthcare through the CAK, with a treaty contribution deducted from your pension or benefit. In other cases you take out insurance that applies in your new country, or international health insurance; the premium depends on your age, your health and the area of cover.

  • Voluntary AOW insurance

There is no amount here: the premium depends on your income, and the SVB works it out for you. In 2026 the AOW premium is 17.9 percent of your income, at least € 569 and at most € 5,693 per person per year; the Anw premium comes on top. Whoever doesn't insure themselves voluntarily later gets 2 percent less AOW for every year they weren't insured. You can apply up to a year after you started living or working outside the Netherlands.

An order of magnitude based on averages, not a quote. The real amounts depend on your occupation, your route, the season and dozens of choices you still have to make.

The rates in this calculation haven't been checked against the official sources yet.

Keep your calculation for your new country

I'll mail it to you: the total, the amount per block and a link to the breakdown with the sources. The departure checklist for your new country comes with it. After that, four more short mails over a week and a half, about the order and the pitfalls. After that, an occasional email, including one offer. You can stop under every mail.
