Working in Ecuador: a work visa with a registered contract, as self-employed, or as a nomad for abroad
For employment in Ecuador you apply for the trabajo visa, with a contract registered with the Ministry of Labour. For work as a self-employed person or consultant there is a separate visa, and anyone working for an employer abroad can become a digital nomad. All three cost 50 plus 270 dollars and are valid for two years. You register a foreign degree for 25 dollars.

If you want to work in Ecuador, you need a temporary residence visa that allows work. As a tourist you may not work (article 56 of the Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana). For employment there is the trabajo visa, with an employment contract registered by the Ministry of Labour. Anyone who works as self-employed or as a consultant applies for the trabajo autónomo visa. And anyone who works for an employer or clients abroad can come as a digital nomad. Each visa costs 50 dollars for the application and 270 for the visa, and is valid for two years.
| Route | What you show | Fees | Valid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trabajo, employed | employment contract, registered with the Ministry of Labour; statement that the employer has no debts with the SRI, IESS and Superintendencia | 50 + 270 dollars | 2 years |
| Trabajo autónomo | services contract with notarised signatures, RUC or municipal licence | 50 + 270 dollars | 2 years |
| Profesional, técnico, artesano | degree with apostille, registered in Ecuador | 50 + 270 dollars | 2 years |
| Digital nomad | income from abroad of 3 basic wages a month: 1,446 dollars in 2026 | 50 + 270 dollars | up to 2 years |
| Registering a foreign degree | degree with apostille and transcript | 25 dollars |
How does the trabajo visa work?
Your employer draws up an employment contract, or in the public sector an appointment decision, and has it registered with the Ministry of Labour. With the application you submit that proof of registration, together with statements that the employer has no outstanding obligations with the SRI, the IESS and the Superintendencia de Compañías. The usual requirements also apply, such as a criminal record certificate with an apostille; see the residence routes.
If you are employed, your employer registers you with the IESS, the social insurance institute. Article 51 of the migration law gives a foreign resident the right to work and to social security, and says that not being affiliated is penalised. See healthcare in Ecuador.
What if you work for yourself?
Then there is the visa for trabajo autónomo, servicios profesionales, civiles o de consultoría. You show a services contract whose signatures have been acknowledged by a notary, a RUC if you are already resident, or a licence from the municipality. If you work as self-employed from your own premises, add a sworn statement with photos, or proof that you own or rent the space.
As self-employed you register with the SRI for a RUC; see registration and numbers. With the IESS you can join voluntarily as self-employed for 17.60% of an income you declare yourself, at least on the basic wage of 482 dollars.
What may a digital nomad do?
Work remotely for an employer, client or your own company abroad. You show this with documents about that work, and your income with foreign bank statements: 3 basic wages a month over the last three months, or 36 basic wages a year. You need health insurance covering Ecuador.
The nomad visa is meant for work for abroad. If you go to work for an Ecuadorian employer or Ecuadorian clients, you need the trabajo or trabajo autónomo visa. Make your visa match who pays you.
What if you need a degree?
For the visa for professionals and technicians your degree must be registered in Ecuador. You do this in the SIAU, the online counter of the Senescyt, the higher education agency. You upload your degree with apostille, a transcript showing the length of study and a statement from the institution about the field of study. Then you show the originals at an appointment. It costs 25 dollars.
Degrees in healthcare and doctorates follow their own route. The degree must match an Ecuadorian level, and the institution must be accredited in the Netherlands. Documents in Spanish or English need no translation; a Dutch-language degree does.
Have your Dutch degree legalised before you leave; that goes through DUO and a court, see school in Ecuador. Which route suits you is in the residence routes, and what you earn alongside your pension in AOW, pension and tax.
In Vertrekklaar this is phase 2 of 5 of the journey, step 2.1: the same steps, but for your situation — in your order, tickable, and with the deadlines watched. See the whole journey to Ecuador or go straight to step 2.1 in the open plan.

Working in America: your right to work hangs on your status, not on a permit
In America there is no separate work permit you apply for: your right to work follows from your visa status. Whoever comes on an E-2 may only work in their own business; the partner of an E-2 or L-1 holder may work anywhere. Whoever needs an Employment Authorization Document applies for it with Form I-765. After that comes a labour market without statutory holidays and with twelve weeks of unpaid family leave.

Working in Argentina: as a trabajador migrante, self-employed or remotely
For a job with an Argentine employer there is the residencia as a trabajador migrante: through RaDEX first one year, renewable; up to three years only through a consulate. Anyone with another temporary residence may also work under the migration law. As a self-employed person you usually work in the monotributo, one monthly amount for tax, pension and healthcare. You have a Dutch degree recognised at a public university.
