Your pet to Turkey: the double titre clock

Turkey requires a rabies titre test with three months' waiting time after the blood sample — and because Turkey is a high-risk country for the EU, the same titre requirement will later apply on every visit back to the Netherlands. Whoever has the test done in the Netherlands before departure solves both clocks in one go; whoever postpones it ties their animal down for months.

Most pet steps on this site revolve around one clock: the certificate that must be fresh. With Turkey everything revolves around two clocks that both hang on the same blood test — and around the order in which you have it done. This article sets out the countdown calendar.

The Turkish requirements in a row

For the import of a dog or cat Turkey requires: a microchip (inserted before the rabies vaccination), a valid rabies vaccination, and a rabies titre test showing that the vaccination works — with two hard deadlines: the blood sample at least thirty days after the vaccination, and import only three months after the blood sample.

Add to that the usual papers: a veterinary health certificate according to the Turkish model, a worming treatment shortly before departure (24 to 120 hours), the animal at least six months old, and a maximum of two animals per person.

The return-journey rule that decides everything

For the European Union, Turkey is a high-risk country for rabies. That means: whoever wants to go back to the Netherlands with their animal — for a birthday, a Christmas, for good — must be able to show a titre test. And there's the trap: if that test is only done in Turkey, a waiting period of ninety days applies after the blood sample before the animal may re-enter the EU.

The solution is simple and must happen before departure: have the titre test done in the Netherlands, at your own vet, well before the move. A test taken in the EU before departure remains valid as long as the rabies vaccinations are renewed without interruption — then the waiting period lapses on every return journey, for life. The same test also covers the Turkish three-month requirement: that clock then simply runs out in the Netherlands.

The countdown calendar

Count back from the flight date and you see why this is the longest clock of the whole route: the vaccination at least four months before departure (because the blood sample may only be taken thirty days later, and then three months of waiting follow), the titre test straight after those thirty days, the health certificate and the worming in the final days. Whoever still has to arrange the chip or vaccination arrives at four to six months of total lead time.

The journey itself is simple by comparison: Turkey is a short flight, many airlines take small animals in the cabin and larger ones as accompanied cargo, and with test, certificate and transport the costs stay in the hundreds of euros per animal. The sting isn't in the journey but in the calendar — start on it first, not last.
