With a Dutch passport you travel to Guyana without a visa. Both NederlandWereldwijd and the Guyanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs say so. How long you may stay is set out in the Immigration Act: on arrival an immigration officer gives you a stay of at most three months. The Chief Immigration Officer can extend it, but to at most three years after the day you entered. Anyone who wants to stay longer or work needs a purpose: work, business, study or a family with a Guyanese citizen.
We found no separate route for retirees or people living off their income, with a fixed income threshold, in the Immigration Act or on the ministries' websites. That makes Guyana different from Colombia or Panama.
| Route | Who applies | What the government states |
|---|---|---|
| Visit on arrival | you, at the border | at most 3 months (Immigration Act, s. 12) |
| Extension of the visit | you, online with the Immigration Support Services | GYD 5,125; GYD 28,700 for an extension of more than 3 months; at most two extensions of 3 months |
| Work (landing permit) | the employer, before you arrive | vacancy advertised in the newspapers for 3 consecutive months; 1 month to process |
| Business (landing permit) | a sponsor or company in Guyana | business registration, tax and NIS receipts; 1 month to process |
| Study (landing permit) | you, with documents from the school | evidence of funding; the school shows its registration, tax and NIS receipts |
| Naturalisation | you; the requirements are with Home Affairs | 12 months' residence just before applying, and 5 years in the 7 years before that |
GYD is the Guyanese dollar. The amounts are those on the e-services portal of the Immigration Support Services, the immigration service of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
How long may you stay as a visitor?
Section 12 of the Immigration Act gives anyone who is not a national of one of the Caribbean countries listed in the Act a stay of at most three months on arrival. The Netherlands is not on that list. The officer notes the purpose: visit, employment, business, medical treatment or "any other purpose of a temporary nature".
If you want to stay longer, you apply online for an extension of stay. You send a letter to the head of the Immigration Support Services, evidence that you can pay for the stay and a copy of your entire passport with all stamps. According to the portal you get at most two extensions of three months each.
If you stay past the end of your permitted stay without an extension, section 13 of the Act deems you a prohibited immigrant, someone who may not be there. So apply for the extension before the date in your passport.
How do you come in to work?
Work in Guyana runs through the employer. The employer applies to the Ministry of Home Affairs for a landing permit for employment before you arrive. It includes your employment contract, a police clearance, a medical report, your credentials and proof that the company is registered and pays its taxes and NIS contributions. The vacancy must have been advertised in the newspapers for three consecutive months. The ministry counts on one month to process it. Extending your stay and work permit is a separate application, the employment visa extension. More in working in Guyana.
Every document not in English must be translated. Guyana is a party to the Apostille Convention, says NederlandWereldwijd.
What if you want to invest or start a business?
There is a landing permit for business, with a sponsor or company in Guyana. For investors the Investment Act promises that the government "shall facilitate" their entry, stay and work permits, in accordance with the Immigration Act (sections 20 and 21). The Act names no minimum amount. The government's investor office is called GO-Invest; its website could not be reached at the time of writing.
When can you live in Guyana for good?
We found no application for an indefinite residence permit of the kind many countries have. The long road is naturalisation. The Guyana Citizenship Act requires that you lived in Guyana for the twelve months just before your application, and for at least five years in total in the seven years before that. Married to a Guyanese citizen? Then there is registration as a citizen by marriage; the list of documents is with the ministry.
After arrival you first sort out your numbers: see registration and numbers. How the steps fit together is in the route to Guyana.
In Vertrekklaar this is phase 1 of 5 of the journey, step 1.1: the same steps, but for your situation — in your order, tickable, and with the deadlines watched. See the whole journey to Guyana or go straight to step 1.1 in the open plan.
