School in Guyana: compulsory schooling, the immunisation certificate and papers from the Netherlands
In Guyana the Education Act's school duty applies to children aged 6 to 15, and at schools receiving government funds elementary education is free. No child enters a school or day-care centre without an immunisation certificate from a doctor registered in Guyana. Dutch child benefit stops when you go to live in Guyana.

In Guyana parents must make sure their child receives instruction in reading, writing and arithmetic. The Education Act applies that duty to children aged 6 to 15. At a school that receives government funds, elementary education is free. The biggest hurdle for a child from the Netherlands is something else: no school or day-care centre admits your child without an immunisation certificate, signed by a doctor registered in Guyana.
| Topic | What the law or the authority says |
|---|---|
| Compulsory schooling | 6 to 15 years (Education Act, s. 22) |
| School fees | none for elementary instruction at a school with government funds (s. 30) |
| Immunisation certificate | required for school (ages 3 to 18) and day care (from 6 months) |
| Diseases in the Act | BCG (tuberculosis), diphtheria, whooping cough, polio, smallpox, tetanus |
| Who signs the certificate | a doctor registered in Guyana, or someone the ministry has authorised |
| Dutch child benefit | stops if you live outside the Netherlands (SVB) |
What does the school ask for at enrolment?
The Public Health (School Children) Immunisation Act says that nobody may be admitted to a school or day-care centre without a certificate of immunisation. It shows that your child has been vaccinated or has had the disease. It is signed by a Health Officer: a doctor registered in Guyana, or someone the Ministry of Health has authorised to administer vaccines. In that Act a school is any institution for children aged three to eighteen.
The list in the Act also names BCG, the vaccination against tuberculosis, and smallpox. Bring your child's vaccination record and have a doctor in Guyana check what is missing, before the first school day. If your child cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, a doctor's certificate is enough; during an epidemic the minister may still temporarily exclude such a child.
Which other documents a school asks for, such as reports or a birth certificate, varies by school. The Ministry of Education's website could not be reached by us at the time of writing; ask the school itself.
How do you bring the papers from the Netherlands?
Guyana uses the apostille, says NederlandWereldwijd. You first have DUO check a Dutch diploma or transcript. A court then makes the legalisation final with an apostille. DUO only does this for an original, complete document on the institution's paper, signed by the institution.
For other Dutch documents, such as a birth certificate, DUO refers you to NederlandWereldwijd to check which legalisation is needed. For documents not in English, Guyanese immigration asks for an English translation.
Does your child need their own residence status?
A child travels on their own valid passport, writes NederlandWereldwijd. For students the Ministry of Home Affairs has a landing permit for student status, with among other things evidence of funding and the school's registration; a police clearance and medical report are only needed from age 18. Whether a child of a parent with a work permit also needs such a permit, we could not find at an official source. Ask when you arrange the parents' residence papers; see the residence routes.
If you travel alone with a child under 18, NederlandWereldwijd advises bringing the documents you need for travelling with a minor.
What happens to child benefit?
The SVB is clear: anyone who goes to live outside the Netherlands is not insured for child benefit. Still having an address or house in the Netherlands makes no difference. If you still work in the Netherlands, you may be insured. Guyana has no social security treaty with the Netherlands, so there is no treaty that keeps child benefit going either; see AOW, pension and tax in Guyana.
