Dog or cat to Chile: the SAG's new rules since July 2026

Since 27 July 2026 Chile has new requirements for dogs, cats and ferrets. Your animal needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old, a deworming 5 to 30 days before the certificate and a check-up within 10 days. The certificate is valid for 10 days. An EU pet passport counts, if it shows all the requirements.

A dog or cat may come with you to Chile, with a certificate from the vet authority of the country of origin. The rules are in Resolución 3.343 of 2026 of the SAG, the Chilean agriculture and livestock service, amended by Resolución 5.444. They have applied since 27 July 2026 and replace the old 2021 rules. The strictest point is the clock: the certificate is valid for only 10 days, and the check-up and deworming must fall just before it.

Requirement Timing Source
Microchip or tattoo to ISO 11784/11785, number matching the certificate Res. 3.343, point 1.2
Rabies vaccination for a first vaccination at least 21 days before arrival Res. 3.343, point 1.3
Deworming, internal and external 5 to 30 days before the certificate is issued SAG
Clinical check-up by a vet within 10 days before the certificate is issued Res. 3.343, point 1.1
Certificado Veterinario Internacional valid for 10 days, extendable by 5 days at most Res. 3.343, point 2.4
EU pet passport valid for dogs and cats from the EU, in Spanish or English Res. 3.343, point 2.2

What counts as a first vaccination?

The SAG calls an animal primo-vacunado if it receives the first dose of its life, or if the previous dose had already expired. Such an animal must be vaccinated at least 21 days before arriving in Chile, whatever its age. For an animal that was boosted on time, the certificate shows the details of the last two doses. If they are missing, the animal counts as vaccinated for the first time.

The NVWA adds that the chip must be in place before the rabies vaccination. Otherwise that vaccination is not valid. Have your own vet arrange both.

Is the EU pet passport enough?

For dogs and cats from the EU, the pasaporte para animales de compañía de la Unión Europea may replace the certificate, the resolution says, but only if it shows that all requirements are met. The passport must be issued in Spanish or English. The certificate shows, among other things, the date and product of the deworming and the last two rabies vaccinations.

A passport with only the rabies vaccination is not enough. It only counts if it shows that all requirements are met, and those include the check-up and the deworming. Have your vet do them in the last days before your flight and record them in the passport.

The NVWA writes that for travel outside the EU an NVWA vet often comes to check whether your animal meets the requirements of the destination country. You then receive a health certificate. Ask the NVWA whether that is needed for Chile alongside the passport.

What happens on arrival?

At the border the SAG checks the certificate or the passport. If the papers are not in order, the SAG can take health measures at any point of entry, at the expense of whoever imports the animal, and impose a sanction as well. According to the Aduana, on arrival with an animal you fill in a sworn declaration for the SAG and customs; for anyone under 18 a representative does so.

Chile declared itself free of canine rabies caused by the V1 and V2 variants in 2010, the resolution's preamble states. The SAG wants to prevent that rabies from returning.

And ferrets or other animals?

A ferret needs, besides the certificate, a permit from the SAG's division for natural resources, the DIPROREN, and must be neutered. For birds, rodents, reptiles and rabbits this procedure does not apply. Ask the SAG which rules apply then.

Can your pet later go back to the Netherlands briefly and return to Chile?

Yes. A dog or cat that leaves Chile temporarily comes back on the SAG's export certificate, within 60 days of its issue, if the rabies vaccination is valid and the animal is chipped. That does not apply to ferrets. Watch out on the way back to the EU: the NVWA writes that a rabies vaccination entered in the passport outside the EU is not valid.
