What does emigrating to Suriname cost?

Answer four questions and you get an honest range for your situation. For every item it says whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The paperwork here costs a few hundred euros and nothing needs translating. The money is in the sea freight, the first months and customs: the goods exemption hangs on papers and the car has rules of its own.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?
Are you taking your car?

Count on a total of

€ 2.200 – € 5.600

Where does that difference come from?

  • The first months€ 1.800 – € 4.500

Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.

Aanvraag en papieren
€ 150 – € 450
De verhuizing
€ 250 – € 650
De eerste maanden
€ 1.800 – € 4.500
Every item, one by onePer item the amount, the source and whether it's a rate or an estimate

Aanvraag en papieren

  • PSA document or residence permit€ 100 – € 200
  • Fresh certificates, apostilles and the VOG(estimate)€ 80 – € 250

De verhuizing

  • Travel(estimate)€ 250 – € 650

The price depends above all on the season. Booking outside the high season (the December festivities and the summer holidays) saves hundreds of euros per seat. The range assumes a one-way flight, Amsterdam to Paramaribo. KLM and Surinam Airways fly direct, in around nine hours.

De eerste maanden

  • The first months(estimate)€ 1.800 – € 4.500

Rents in Paramaribo are low by Dutch standards. A flat costs, converted, roughly € 230 to 450 per month. The expat and new-build segment, in euros or dollars, is above that. Even so, property is dollarised: prices are in practice in dollars. And your starting fund is partly cash, because cash machines are regularly empty and not every payment can be made with a foreign card. This item covers the deposit, rent in advance, temporary furnished housing and the furnishing.

And if you buy a house?

This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.

If you buy, count on 4 to 6% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 10.000 to € 15.000.

The real homework here is not in the percentage but in the title. The transfer runs through the notary. You pay 4% stamp duty on the value (the Surinamese transfer tax, Stamp Act article 32), plus the notary and the registration. In Suriname the question is above all what kind of title you buy. Full or allodial ownership (land that truly belongs to the owner) you can buy as a Dutch national. Leasehold on state land (grondhuur) you cannot hold in your personal name. Moreover, grondhuur carries an obligation to build and the 18-month rule on death. Have the title check done before any down payment.
