What does emigrating to Austria cost?

Answer four questions and you have an honest range for your situation. Every item shows whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The paperwork stays under a hundred euros here. The money is in the deposit, which can run to six months' rent, and in the car, because there's no relocation exemption.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?
Are you taking your car?

Count on a total of

€ 2.600 – € 8.400

Where does that difference come from?

  • The first months€ 2.500 – € 8.000

Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.

The deposit is the outlier here. Three months is customary, but up to six months is permissible. So ask before the viewing. Against that, the agent's commission has almost always been for the landlord since 2023. And for regulated rents, increases in 2026 are legally capped at one per cent. New contracts in Vienna ask market prices of € 17-20 per square metre. The provincial capitals sit noticeably below that. Count the double costs of the search weeks. Also count on the ORF-Beitrag, the broadcasting fee, and the energy contract. They start by themselves after your Meldezettel, your registration at your address.

And if you buy a house?

This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.

If you buy, count on 7 to 12% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 17.500 to € 30.000.

Without an estate agent you come out at around 6.5%, with an agent at 10 to 12%. The Grunderwerbsteuer, the transfer tax, is 3.5%. The entry in the Grundbuch, the land register, costs 1.1%. Both are the same nationwide. On top of that comes a lawyer or notary for the deed (1.5 to 3%). If an estate agent is involved, up to 3% plus VAT is added. Note: the temporary exemption from registration fees lapsed as of 1 July 2026.
