What does a year on the road cost, beyond the travelling itself?

Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. Each item says whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The travelling itself isn't included. What is included is what people forget most often: health insurance for the whole trip, storage for your belongings, distance learning for the children and visas. We say one thing honestly: the premium of the voluntary AOW insurance depends on your income, so that item has no amount.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?

Count on a total of

€ 600 – € 6.600

Where does that difference come from?

  • Health insurance for a year on the road€ 600 – € 6.000

Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.

  • Visas along the way(estimate)€ 0 – € 600

The amount depends entirely on your route. Within the EU you need no visa as a Dutch citizen. Outside it, you travel visa-free for a while in many countries, and elsewhere you pay for a visa on arrival, an e-visa or an extension. A digital nomad visa costs more. The band is an order of magnitude for a year with a few countries outside the EU; the amounts per country are in the travel advice of NederlandWereldwijd.

De eerste maanden

  • Health insurance for a year on the road(estimate)€ 600 – € 6.000

The amount is for one year. If you stay registered, you keep your basic health insurance and only pay for supplementary or travel insurance for abroad: that's the lower end. If you deregister, you take out international health insurance. The premium depends on your age, your health and whether the United States and Canada are included: that's the upper end.

Deliberately no amount here

  • Suspending the car with the RDW

There is no amount here, because not everyone has a car that stays behind. Whoever suspends their car pays the RDW € 88.05 for one year, € 117.15 for two and € 146.25 for three years, for a passenger car up to 15 years old. In return you no longer pay road tax or insurance.

  • Registering the boat and the sea letter, if you sail

There is no amount here, because this only applies to the sailing route. Registration with the Kadaster costs € 630, plus the ILT's costs for the sea letter (zeebrief).

  • Voluntary AOW insurance, if you deregister

There is no amount here: the premium depends on your income, and the SVB calculates it for you. Whoever doesn't insure voluntarily later gets 2 percent less AOW for every year they weren't insured. You can sign up until one year after you stopped being insured.

An order of magnitude based on averages, not a quote. The real amounts depend on your occupation, your route, the season and dozens of choices you still have to make.

The rates in this calculation haven't been checked against the official sources yet.

The calculator above works with a few questions, but the journey itself has more. In Vertrekklaar the same model calculates with your real situation: who comes along, whether you stay registered, and whether your belongings go into storage. It also watches the clocks: the eight months of the registration, the one year for the voluntary AOW insurance, the blood test for your pet and the four months for your health insurance when you come back. One-off € 299, no subscription.
