What does emigrating to Norway cost?

Answer four questions and you have an honest range for your situation. For every item you see whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The paperwork costs almost nothing here. The money is in the border, the deposit and the price level.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?
Are you taking your car?

Count on a total of

€ 4.200 – € 13.800

Where does that difference come from?

  • The first months€ 4.000 – € 13.000

Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.

  • National ID card (police)€ 70 – € 75
  • Certificates with apostille(estimate)€ 30 – € 150

De verhuizing

  • Travel(estimate)€ 150 – € 550

The ferry with car and cabin is the big item. Outside the high season it makes a considerable difference. The usual route is one day's drive to northern Denmark and then the Hirtshals-Larvik ferry, in four hours. Or you drive to Kiel in northern Germany and take the overnight boat to Oslo there, with a cabin. Entirely overland via Sweden is possible too. You then pay the Great Belt and Øresund tolls along the way.

De eerste maanden

  • The first months(estimate)€ 4.000 – € 13.000

This is the largest item, for three reasons. First the deposit: it may legally be up to six months' rent, and it must be held in a separate account in your name. Second, the price level of groceries, and certainly of alcohol, is far above the Dutch one. Third, your employer withholds the emergency rate of 50% as long as you have no tax card. You get that back, but you feel it in exactly these months. The small rental market moreover often means a temporary interim home.

And if you buy a house?

This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.

If you buy, count on 2 to 3% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 5.000 to € 7.500.

By far the largest item is the dokumentavgift, the Norwegian transfer tax: 2.5% of the purchase price. Registering the deed costs only 545 kroner (2026), and a mortgage deed another 545. One exception saves thousands of euros. If you buy a borettslag home, there is no dokumentavgift at all. Such a home is a share in a housing cooperative, which is very common in Norway. That difference is large enough to adjust your search to it.
