What does emigrating to Belize cost?
Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. For every item it says whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The application differs per route: the QRP costs 150 dollars for the application, 1,000 dollars for you and 200 dollars for the card; permanent residence costs a Dutch national 6,000 Belize dollars, after a year in which you pay 200 Belize dollars every thirty days for your extension. The money further sits in three items: the health policy that replaces the CAK and returns every year, the move across the ocean, and without the QRP the import duties, on a car about two thirds of the value. One thing we state honestly. For the examination and the test for a Belizean driving licence there's no rate anywhere; that item is an estimate.

A rough indication for your situation
A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.
Count on a total of
€ 4.700 – € 13.200
Where does that difference come from?
- The first months€ 2.500 – € 6.500
Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.
- Aanvraag en papieren
- € 1.400 – € 4.500
- De verhuizing
- € 600 – € 1.400
- De eerste maanden
- € 2.600 – € 7.300
Every item, one by onePer item the amount, the source and whether it's a rate or an estimate
Aanvraag en papieren
- Your right of residence, the QRP or permanent residence€ 1.100 – € 2.800
- Extending your stay at Immigration every thirty days€ 90 – € 1.100
- VOG, apostilles, English translations and the medical examination(estimate)€ 250 – € 600
The amount depends on the number of documents. A couple with birth certificates, a marriage certificate, two VOGs and the statements from the SVB and the pension fund quickly reaches eight documents. A VOG for a visa or immigration costs € 41.35 through the municipality. An apostille from the court costs € 27 per document. Every document that isn't in English you have translated; there is no fixed rate anywhere for that translation, count on a few tens of euros per document. For the QRP a medical examination with an HIV test comes on top, at most three months old; for permanent residence an examination by a doctor in Belize with tests for HIV, VDRL and TB. There's no rate at an official source for that either.
De verhuizing
- Flights(estimate)€ 600 – € 1.400
The spread sits in the season and the luggage: whoever travels with two extra suitcases pays the top. The amount is for one way from Amsterdam to Belize City, with one or two changes.
De eerste maanden
- The first months(estimate)€ 2.500 – € 6.500
This item consists of rent paid in advance, furnishing what didn't come along, and the months in which you still have double costs. A tenancy law that regulates the deposit we haven't found at an official source; count on a deposit. Rents vary widely between the cayes, the coast and the interior. Count the exchange-rate risk too: your income comes in euros, life runs in Belize dollars, which are pegged to the US dollar.
- Bank, phone, tax adviser and the first desks(estimate)€ 150 – € 600
Small money, but it's here because it all comes at once in the first weeks. It's about an account at a bank in Belize, a local SIM card, the copies and translations you hand in again at every desk, and a conversation with a tax adviser. It's also here because the bank charges a rate when transferring your pension that you want to know in advance, and because the Central Bank has exchange control rules.
- A Belizean driving licence(estimate)€ 20 – € 150
And if you buy a house?
This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.
If you buy, count on 8 to 10% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 20.000 to € 25.000.
The fixed item is the stamp duty on the transfer of land (Stamp Duties Act, section 72, revised edition 2020): the first 20,000 Belize dollars are exempt, above that a buyer who isn't a Belizean, a Belizean company or a CARICOM national pays 8 percent. A Belizean pays 5 percent. On top of that come the lawyer and the registration; they're not at an official source as a percentage and are the top of the band. If you buy as a non-resident from a resident, you notify the transfer to the Central Bank of Belize in advance. With the QRP you may buy land or a house to live in yourself.
An order of magnitude based on averages, not a quote. The real amounts depend on your occupation, your route, the season and dozens of choices you still have to make.
Rates checked on 19 October 2026.
