Working on Bonaire: free, but without a safety net
Dutch citizens may work freely on Bonaire, and the minimum wage has been raised substantially. But there is no unemployment insurance, onderstand requires five years' residence, and a pension is a negotiating point outside the public sector. The honest story about working on an island without a backstop.
Working on Bonaire is threshold-free for Dutch citizens: no work permit, no waiting period. The employment conditions behind it are not — and the difference with the European Netherlands sits exactly where you only notice it when things go wrong.
The wage: raised substantially, and still tight
The minimum wage has been raised by tens of per cent in two years — to $ 10.69 an hour in 2026, about $ 1,850 a month for a full working week. That wasn't generosity but necessity: the Social Minimum Committee (Commissie Sociaal Minimum) found that the cost of living on the islands was above many incomes. Wages outside government are generally well below the Dutch level, while rent, electricity and groceries are above it. Whoever weighs a job offer therefore doesn't convert to euros but to the island itself: what does housing cost, what is left over.
The safety net that isn't there
This is the core of this article. On Bonaire there is no unemployment insurance. Whoever loses their job has no WW entitlement (the Dutch unemployment benefit) — there is nothing to apply for. The only safety net is onderstand (the Caribbean Netherlands social assistance), and it has a condition that excludes newcomers: you must be an "island child" or have lived legally on the island for five uninterrupted years. A Dutch citizen who loses their job in year two therefore falls back on savings, family or a departure. From 2027 a temporary unemployment provision is coming — 75% of the wage, for at most three months — but that too is a plaster, not a system. The practical conclusion: your buffer in the bank is your unemployment insurance, and six months of fixed costs is not a luxury but a minimum.
What there is: in case of illness the employer continues to pay at least 80% of the wage, in case of an accident at work the accident insurance applies, in case of dismissal through no fault of your own the one-off cessantia payment, and maternity leave lasts sixteen weeks on full pay.
Pension: read what is not in your contract
Outside government, education and healthcare — where the Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland runs an average-salary scheme — Bonaire knows no automatic pension accrual. An employer's pension there is an employment condition to negotiate over, not a given, and many private employers offer nothing. Add to that that your accrual of AOW (the Dutch state pension) stops and the Caribbean AOV (the Caribbean Netherlands state pension) only accrues from the time you settle (two per cent a year), and the pension gap becomes the silent main question of this emigration. Whoever takes it seriously arranges a supplement themselves — or accepts the gap consciously and with open eyes.
Starting for yourself: two counters, eight weeks
Running a business is possible: the establishment permit (vestigingsvergunning) from the public body (Openbaar Lichaam) costs $ 140 and must be decided within eight weeks — after that it counts as granted by operation of law — and registration with the Chamber of Commerce Bonaire (Kamer van Koophandel Bonaire) costs a small annual contribution. The market is small and runs on tourism, diving, hospitality, construction and services; whoever keeps their Dutch clients at a distance starts with a head start.
In Vertrekklaar this is phase 1 of 5 of the journey: the same considerations, but applied to your situation — in your order, tickable, and with the deadlines monitored. See the whole journey to Bonaire.

Your car to Bonaire: the twelve-month rule
The removal-goods exemption on Bonaire also applies to the car — but with a stricter requirement: twelve months of ownership and use. Whoever falls short pays 25% on value plus freight, and the Dutch BPM refund doesn't exist outside the EU. The whole sum, including the diesel trap in the road tax.

Buying a house on Bonaire: 5% at purchase — and after that living there yourself makes the difference
Bonaire is the Caribbean Netherlands, and you notice it at purchase: a Dutch notary, a transfer tax of 5% via the deed, and a tax office that is simply called belastingdienst-cn.nl. After that one question counts: do you live there yourself? The owner-occupied home is exempt from the property tax that second homes and rented-out property do pay every year.
