What does emigrating to Peru cost?

Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. For every item it says whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The application itself is cheap: the calidad migratoria costs S/ 58.80, about 15 euros, and the carné de extranjería S/ 24. The money sits in three other items: the health policy that replaces the CAK and returns every year, the move across the ocean with a levy of 12 percent on your household goods, and the car, which may only come along if it runs on petrol and is at most two years old. One thing we state honestly. For the medical check and the exam when exchanging your driving licence there's no national rate anywhere; that item is an estimate.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?

Count on a total of

€ 3.400 – € 8.600

Where does that difference come from?

  • The first months€ 2.500 – € 6.000

Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.

Aanvraag en papieren

  • The application for the calidad migratoria at Migraciones€ 10 – € 25
  • The carné de extranjería at Migraciones€ 5 – € 15
  • VOG, apostilles and translations(estimate)€ 150 – € 450

The amount depends on the number of documents. A couple with birth certificates, a marriage certificate, two VOGs and the statements from the SVB and the pension fund quickly reaches eight documents. A VOG for a visa or immigration costs € 41.35 through the municipality. An apostille from the court costs € 27 per document. For a Spanish translation there's no fixed rate anywhere; count on a few tens of euros per document, if Migraciones asks for one. In Peru the Interpol statement for the carné comes on top. Whoever starts too early and has to redo things is at the top.

De verhuizing

  • Flights(estimate)€ 550 – € 1.300

The spread sits in the season and the luggage: whoever travels with two extra suitcases pays the top. The amount is for one way from Amsterdam to Lima, direct or with a change. Whoever flies on to Cusco or Arequipa is higher.

De eerste maanden

  • The first months(estimate)€ 2.500 – € 6.000

This item consists of rent paid in advance, furnishing what didn't come along, and the months in which you still carry double costs. Under the Código Civil you agree whether rent is paid in advance or afterwards, and without an agreement it's afterwards (article 1676); so what a landlord asks in advance is in the contract. Rents vary widely: in the better neighbourhoods of Lima, such as Miraflores and San Isidro, you pay a different rate than in Arequipa or Cusco. Count the currency risk too: your income comes in euros, life runs in soles.

  • Bank, phone, contador and the first desks(estimate)€ 150 – € 600

Small money, but it's here because it all comes at once in the first weeks. It's about a Peruvian account at a bank supervised by the SBS, a local SIM card, the copies at every desk, the Interpol statement for the carné and a contador for the first return. It's also here because the bank charges a rate when transferring your pension that you want to know in advance.

  • Exchanging your driving licence for a Peruvian one(estimate)€ 60 – € 200

Deliberately no amount here

  • Taking the car

There is deliberately no amount here, and no question about it. A used passenger car may only enter Peru if it runs on petrol, is at most two years old from the model year and has driven at most 32,000 kilometres (SUNAT, Decreto Supremo 005-2020-MTC). A used passenger car on diesel may not enter. The exception is a collector's car of 35 years or older. So count on selling in the Netherlands and buying again in Peru. You don't get the bpm back: that refund only applies on registration in another EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.

And if you buy a house?

This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.

If you buy, count on 2 to 4% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 5.000 to € 10.000.

The fixed item is the alcabala, the transfer tax: 3 percent of the value, paid by the buyer. The first 10 UIT are exempt; in 2026 that's S/ 55,000. You pay it before the end of the month after the transfer. On top come the notary and the register. For those two there's no rate as a percentage at an official source; they are the top of the band. Foreigners buy in their own name: the constitution gives them the same position as Peruvians when it comes to property (article 71), except within fifty kilometres of the border.
