Bank and payments on Bonaire: the dollar, the CRIB number and the guarantee up to $ 25,000

On Bonaire the dollar has been legal tender since 1 January 2011, and a transfer from the Netherlands is not a SEPA payment but an international one with extra costs. What you need: a registration, your sédula and the CRIB number the Tax Administration creates automatically. What you get: a deposit guarantee up to $ 25,000 per person per bank since 2025.

Yes, you open a local bank account on Bonaire, and you'll want one. The currency is the US dollar, legal tender in the Caribbean Netherlands since 1 January 2011, and your Dutch euro account works on the island as a foreign account. The government said it without detours in answer to parliamentary questions: local banks charge extra commissions per transaction for transfers in euros, comparable to the rates for transfers outside the SEPA area. What you need is the chain of your arrival: a registration at Civil Affairs, the sédula and the CRIB number. What you get back is more security than you think: since 1 January 2025 the deposit guarantee protects your balance up to $ 25,000 per person per bank.

Why does your Dutch account only half work here?

Constitutionally the Caribbean Netherlands belongs to the Netherlands, but towards the European Union it has the status of overseas country and territory. As a result the European rules on payment accounts don't apply there, and you notice that in two ways. On Bonaire there is no European right to a basic payment account, and a Dutch bank may refuse or close a euro account for whoever no longer lives in the European Netherlands; that happened, and the Minister of Finance named the consequence himself: whoever depends on the local banks pays extra for every transfer in euros. The government therefore prepared an amendment to the Financial Markets Decree BES so that banks from the European Netherlands can offer payment accounts on the islands without an extra licence.

Practically: keep your Dutch account for what stays behind in the Netherlands, such as your pension, your tax return and the things you are still cancelling, and get salary and fixed costs running in dollars as soon as possible. Ask your Dutch bank in writing before you leave whether the account may stay open with an address on Bonaire; the answer determines how you set up the first months.

What do you need to open an account?

The order of your first weeks determines when the bank can help you. The sédula is the island's identity document, compulsory to carry from the age of twelve, and is only issued to whoever is registered in the population register of Bonaire; count on a waiting time of at least a week. The CRIB number is created automatically by the Tax Administration Caribbean Netherlands for every resident between 15 and 65 after you have registered at Civil Affairs; you collect it in person at the counter of the tax office, with your identity document, and get it straight away. You need that number for every payment to the Tax Administration, for the tax return, to put a car in your name at the Public Entity, and your employer needs it for the payroll. Whoever falls outside that age group requests the number at the same counter.

Which banks hold a licence to operate on Bonaire through a branch is in the public register of De Nederlandsche Bank; that register is the list on which the deposit guarantee rests.

What does it cost and what is protected?

Item Amount, deadline or rule
Legal tender US dollar, since 1 January 2011
Transfer in euros through a local bank extra commission per transaction, comparable to outside SEPA
Deposit guarantee Caribbean Netherlands from 1 dollar cent to $ 25,000 per person per bank, since 1 January 2025
Coverage before 2025 $ 10,000 per person
Which accounts current and savings accounts and term deposits at banks with a DNB licence
CRIB number automatic for residents aged 15 to 65, collect at the counter with ID
Sédula only after registration; waiting time at least a week

The deposit guarantee is free and automatic: should a bank collapse, De Nederlandsche Bank compensates balances on current and savings accounts and term deposits up to the maximum, per person or company and per bank, regardless of the number of accounts. Whoever holds more than $ 25,000 therefore spreads across banks, or leaves the part that belongs in the Netherlands there under the Dutch guarantee.

The CRIB number is not a tax detail but your key. Without that number your employer cannot process your pay, you cannot put a registration plate in your name and cannot file a return. It only comes into being after your registration at Civil Affairs, and that registration must happen within five days of the IND approval; the bank is thus the last link of a chain you cannot reverse.

What do you arrange in the first weeks?

First the registration and the sédula, then the CRIB number at the counter, and only then the bank. Take at least your sédula and your passport to the bank; which proofs of income and address a bank asks for besides that differs per bank and is deliberately not stated here. Then switch your salary, the rent and the utilities to the dollar account, and keep the euro account for the Netherlands. The order of all those steps, with the clocks, is in the step-by-step plan for Bonaire; what happens to your pension and tax is covered separately.
