What does emigrating to Guyana cost?
Answer a few short questions and you have an honest range for your situation. For every item it says whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. On the counter side Guyana is cheap: an extension of your stay costs 5,125 GYD, about 22 euros, and a TIN 1,000 GYD, nothing from age 65. The money sits in three other items: the health policy that replaces the CAK and returns every year, the move across the ocean, and the car, which can't come along. One thing we state honestly. For the landing permit for work or business the e-portal names no amount; the employer or the company usually pays it, and it isn't included.

A rough indication for your situation
A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.
Count on a total of
€ 3.400 – € 9.200
Where does that difference come from?
- The first months€ 2.500 – € 6.500
Below you'll find per item where the upper and the lower limit come from.
- Aanvraag en papieren
- € 150 – € 600
- De verhuizing
- € 600 – € 1.400
- De eerste maanden
- € 2.600 – € 7.200
Every item, one by onePer item the amount, the source and whether it's a rate or an estimate
Aanvraag en papieren
- The extension of your stay at the Immigration Support Services€ 20 – € 150
- The TIN at the Guyana Revenue Authority€ 0 – € 5
- VOG, medical report, apostilles and translations(estimate)€ 150 – € 450
The amount depends on your route and the number of documents. For work and business the Ministry of Home Affairs asks for a police clearance and a medical report. A VOG for a visa or immigration costs € 41.35 through the municipality. An apostille from the court costs € 27 per document. Every document that isn't in English you have translated; there's no fixed rate anywhere for that translation or for the medical report, count on a few tens of euros per document. A couple with a marriage certificate, birth certificates, two VOGs and two medical reports quickly reaches eight documents.
De verhuizing
- Flights(estimate)€ 600 – € 1.400
The spread sits in the season and the luggage: whoever travels with two extra suitcases pays the top. The amount is for one way from Amsterdam to Georgetown, with one or more changes.
De eerste maanden
- The first months(estimate)€ 2.500 – € 6.500
This item consists of rent paid in advance, furnishing what didn't come along, and the months in which you still have double costs. A landlord may not ask for a premium, a sum on top of the rent as a condition of the contract (Rent Restriction Act, section 20). Rents vary widely: in the better areas of Georgetown you pay a different amount than outside the capital. Count the exchange-rate risk too: your income comes in euros, life runs in Guyanese dollars.
- Bank, phone, tax adviser and the first desks(estimate)€ 150 – € 600
Small money, but it's here because in the first weeks it all comes at once. It's about a Guyanese account, a local SIM card, the copies and translations you hand in again at every desk, and a tax adviser for your first return. It's also here because the bank charges a rate when transferring your pension that you want to know beforehand.
- A Guyanese licence, or as a visitor the foreign driver's permit€ 10 – € 60
Deliberately no amount here
Taking the car
There is deliberately no amount here, and no question about it. Guyana drives on the left, and the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act says that a car with the steering wheel on the left isn't registered, unless the Minister directs otherwise (section 6(2)). So as a rule a Dutch car won't get a registration there. Count on selling in the Netherlands and buying again in Guyana. If you're a settler, the GRA says you import one car at an excise of 5 to 30 percent, without VAT and import duty. For a used car the GRA has wanted an inspection certificate since 1 February 2025, from an authorised agency in the country of export; the only one so far is in Japan. You don't get the bpm back: that refund only applies on registration in another EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
And if you buy a house?
This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.
Note: buying isn't simply allowed here
Transferring a house or land needs a Land Compliance Certificate from the GRA, a statement that allows the transfer. It expires on 30 April of the year after issue.
An order of magnitude based on averages, not a quote. The real amounts depend on your occupation, your route, the season and dozens of choices you still have to make.
Rates checked on 16 October 2026.
