Taking your pet to Sint Maarten: the permit first and the two clocks
No EU regime: for each animal you apply in advance for an Animal Movement Permit that is valid for thirty days, and after that two clocks tick — the rabies vaccination must be older than twenty-one days, the health certificate younger than fourteen. Whoever knows the order makes it comfortably; whoever starts too late pushes back their own departure.
The EU pet passport does nothing outside Europe: Sint Maarten sets its own requirements, and unlike at most destinations it starts here with a permit — not with an examination. This article puts the requirements in the order in which you arrange them.
First the permit: valid for thirty days
For each animal you apply in advance for an Animal Movement Permit from the veterinary service. That permit is valid for thirty days, and that makes it the first piece of the puzzle of your countdown calendar: applying too early means an expired permit on the day of the flight, too late means the rest can't wait. Aim for the month before departure.
Then the two clocks
The requirements for the animal itself revolve around two deadlines that work against each other:
- the rabies vaccination must be more than twenty-one days old on arrival (and given after the microchip);
- the vet's health certificate may be at most fourteen days old on arrival.
Add to that recent parasite treatments — internal within twenty-one days, external within fourteen days before departure — and for dogs the usual combination vaccinations. Animals younger than fifteen weeks or without full vaccination don't get onto the island. A rabies titre test is not required from the Netherlands.
All papers in English: the counter on Sint Maarten does not work in Dutch. Ask your vet for the international, English-language certificate — that saves a round of translation in your busiest weeks.
The journey: air freight in an IATA crate
Small animals may go into the cabin with some airlines; most dogs go as (accompanied) air freight in an IATA-approved crate. Count on hundreds of euros per animal on top of the examinations, and book the animal at the same time as your own seat — the freight and cabin places per flight are limited, certainly on the one direct route.
The countdown calendar in a row: microchip and rabies vaccination well in advance (given at least four weeks before departure), the permit in the month before, the certificate and the treatments in the last two weeks, and the crate at home weeks earlier so the animal gets used to it. Whoever starts too late here pushes back their own departure — at this destination the pet is more often the critical path than the container.

Moving to a free port: the container, the car and the hurricane season
Sint Maarten levies no import duties — the customs circus of the neighbouring islands falls away, and even the car may come along without an ownership requirement. What remains: the sea container as the clock of your planning, the residual BPM you lose, the annual number plates and a moving calendar that plans around the hurricane season.

Healthcare on Sint Maarten: no CAK route, a ZV for employees — and beyond that you yourself
Within the Kingdom there is no healthcare treaty: your Dutch basic insurance stops and the CAK does nothing for you. The SZV health insurance covers only employees below the wage limit — everyone else, pensioners first and foremost, insures fully privately. How the system works and why the acceptance question comes before everything.

The medical examination: why you shouldn't do it too early
The examination for your Australian visa is valid for twelve months, must be done by a designated panel physician, and applies to the whole family. The art is not passing it — the art is doing it at the right moment.
