With children to Indonesia: the child visa, the sworn translation and a child benefit that stops

Yes, you can move to Indonesia with school-age children, and the immigration service has a route of its own for it: the E31E child visa, for a child of a parent with an Indonesian residence permit, for two years and Rp8,500,000. The find is in the list of documents: the birth and marriage certificates must be in English, or translated into Indonesian by a sworn translator. A Dutch certificate in Dutch is therefore not enough. And on the Dutch side the child benefit stops: Indonesia is not on the SVB's list of treaty countries.

With the child visa your child may live in Indonesia and go to school, and travel in and out without limit. If the conditions are met, according to the immigration service the child receives the electronic ITAS and the re-entry permit automatically on arrival. The visa must be used within ninety days of issue.

Have the certificates in order before you leave. The immigration service asks for the marriage certificate or marriage book and the birth certificate in English, or translated into Indonesian by a sworn translator. So arrange the certificates and any sworn translation before you leave; afterwards it costs time you don't have during a visa application.

Which school do you choose?

The Dutch government lists the options abroad: a local school, where your child learns the language and makes contact with children in the neighbourhood; an international school, mostly English-speaking, with an international curriculum or that of another country; a fully Dutch school abroad with the Dutch curriculum; or Dutch distance education. If you choose local or international, your child can keep up Dutch through a Dutch Language and Culture school or through distance education.

The foundation for Dutch Education Abroad (NOB) supports that education on behalf of the government and grants subsidy to affiliated schools and providers; the Education Inspectorate supervises them. If you later return, the Diploma Recognition Information Centre determines what a foreign diploma is worth in the Netherlands.

Which school you choose also determines the visa: whoever needs a student visa of their own as a pupil needs a letter of acceptance from the school, and the school or an Indonesian then acts as guarantor.

What happens to the child benefit?

It stops. Whoever lives outside the Netherlands, or leaves to live abroad, is according to the SVB not insured for child benefit, not even if you still have a house in the Netherlands. Per child count on the visa — Rp8,500,000 for two years, or Rp6,000,000 for one year — and on school fees, which are not in these rules. The E30A student visa has three durations, all extendable: Rp6,000,000 for up to one year, Rp8,500,000 for up to two years and Rp12,000,000 for up to four years; that visa too must be used within ninety days of issue.
