What does emigrating to Saba cost?

Four questions, and you have an honest range for your situation — with for every item whether it's a checked rate or an estimate. The paperwork stays under four hundred euros here; the money is in the crossing with a transfer on Sint Maarten, the handful of rental homes, and the first months on an island where electricity costs 55 dollar cents and water arrives by tanker truck.

A rough indication for your situation

A few short questions, and you get a range instead of an amount. That's deliberate: an exact figure would suggest a precision nobody has.

Who's coming along?
Are you taking your household contents?
Is a pet coming along?
Are you taking your car?

Count on a total of

€ 3.100 – € 8.000

Where does that difference come from?

Flying, one way Amsterdam-Sint Maarten with KLM, and then the last hop: the Winair Twin Otter to Saba (from 59 dollars one way) or the ferry from Philipsburg (85 to 90 dollars per person). With a lot of luggage or children, count on a night on Sint Maarten: the KLM flight lands in the afternoon and the last flight or boat of the day doesn't wait. No direct connection; this is the overseas destination with a transfer.

De eerste maanden

  • The first months(estimate)€ 2.500 – € 6.500

Housing is the largest item and the biggest uncertainty: on an island of 2,270 people there is a handful of rental homes, often through the employer, and the usual deposit is one to two months. On top of that come the deposit and the fixed monthly amount of Saba Electric Company — electricity costs 55 dollar cents per kilowatt-hour there, and the air conditioning is the silent heavy user — water by tanker truck ($ 40 per thousand gallons) when the cistern runs dry, plus groceries that, on an import island with one supermarket, sit well above the Dutch level. In the first weeks without a local bank account you pay with a Dutch Visa card, with foreign transaction fees each time.

And if you buy a house?

This calculation assumes renting: the first months include deposit and rent in advance.

If you buy, count on 7 to 9% of the purchase price on top of this amount. On a home of € 250,000 that's € 17.500 to € 22.500.

On the purchase of a home on Saba you pay the transfer tax of the Caribbean Netherlands, calculated on the economic value — even if you buy from family. On top of that come the notary (there is a notary with an office on Saba and Sint Eustatius) and the registration with the Land Registry, which has kept the registers of the BES islands since 2021. Count on 7 to 9% of the purchase price in total. The real money isn't in the buyer's costs but in the supply: building land is scarce and building on a volcano is expensive. One point that really makes a difference: no transfer tax is due on movable goods, so it pays to list them separately in the negotiation.
